
WV Black Bears Drop Two out of the Three against the Batavia Muckdogs

The West Virginia Black Bears drop two out of three against the Batavia Muckdogs this week. After these two loses, the Black Bears are now 7-7.
(Tuesday) The Muckdogs took game one on Tuesday with a final score of 3-1. Batavia brought in a run early to put them on top, 1-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Muckdogs SS Javier Lopez had a line drive to center, bringing in two runs and advancing the scoring, 3-0. The Black Bears tried to battle back in the top of the eighth scoring on a sac fly 3-1, but were retired by the Muckdogs' defense. The game remained scoreless through the ninth making it a final of 3-1.
Starting pitcher for the Black Bears, P James Marvel, only gave up two hits, one run and three strikeouts in six innings pitched.
(Wednesday) The Black Bears defeated the Muckdogs in game two on Wednesday by a final of 9-4. LF Hunter Owen's two-hit, two-RBI performance improved his early batting average to .407. West Virginia scored in the top of the second putting them up by one, (1-0). Batavia would score a run in the bottom of the fourth and bring in two runs in the bottom of the sixth (3-1). The Black Bears' line up proved unstoppable in the top of the seventh with five hits and eight RBI's (9-3). West Virginia only gave up one more run, (homerun) in the top of the ninth to end with a score of 9-4.
P Matt Frawley got the win, giving up one hit, two runs and earning one strikeout. P Yunior Montero came in to close the game, giving up four hits, one run and a homer to the Muckdogs.
(Thursday) With Wednesday's loss, the Muckdogs battled back to take the 4-3 win over the Black Bears on Thursday. The Black Bears took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth by a fielding error and an RBI from DH Chris Harvey. Batavia tied the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth making the score 2-2. The Muckdogs pitching started to struggle in the top of the sixth giving up a run to put West Virginia on top 3-2. The Black Bears failed to hold back the Muckdogs' offense and could not recover after giving up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the ballgame with a 4-3 final.
The Black Bears defense ended the game with a combined four fielding errors. West Virginia's pitching gave up a collective seven hits on two earned runs and earned six strikeouts.
The Black Bears will be back at Monongalia County Ballpark for an Independence Day weekend series versus the Auburn Doubledays tomorrow, Friday, July 1 at 7:05 pm. Friday will be fireworks night at the ballpark!
