Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - After losing seven of their last eight games, the Renegades really needed someone to step up. It turned out the three-headed pitching monster of Eduar Lopez, Noel Rodriguez, and Joe Serrapica is all the team would need in pick up a 4-2 win over the Staten Island Yankees Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium.

An ugly error-filled first inning led to three runs between the clubs. Rightfielder Ricardo Ferreira started the game by reaching on a throwing error by Lopez. The next hitter, centerfielder Dom Thompson-Williams, reached when a throw by first-baseman Nate Lowe on a fielder's choice attempt at second went into right field. A wild pitch moved the runners up a base when second baseman Nick Solak dribbled an infield single along the third-base line, which allowed Ferreira to score and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. A double-play by first-baseman Kane Sweeney plated Thompson and Staten Island was up two.

The Renegades responded with a run in the bottom-half. Leftfielder Ryan Boldt reached on a fielding error by Staten Island starter Drew Finley, but was thrown out trying to steal. Centerfielder Jake Fraley then took things into his own hands for Hudson Valley. He reached on a walk, then stole second and third. He scored when the throw to third from Yankees catcher Radley Haddad went into leftfield and the Renegades pulled to within one.

Hudson Valley took the lead in the second thanks to some more shoddy Yankees defense. With two out and no one on, catcher Danny De La Calle reached on a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Shortstop Bill Pujols walked and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Boldt hit a routine groundball to second that would have ended the inning. However, Solak booted it and De La Calle scored to tie the game. Fraley then legged out an infield single to first by beating Finley, who was covering first, to give the Renegades the lead.

The Renegades added to the lead with a run in the fifth. With two out, rightfielder Garrett Whitley singled and stole second. He would score on an RBI single by Lowe and give the Renegades a 4-2 lead.

That was all Hudson Valley would need as the pitchers dominated. Lopez, Rodriguez and Serrapica combined to retire the final 15 Yankees they faced en route to the win. Lopez (1-1) went six innings, the longest outing for a Renegades starter this season, and got the win by allowing two unearned runs on three hits while striking out two. Serrapica (1) fired two scoreless innings and retired three of the six hitters he faced in picking up his first save of the season.

Starter Drew Finley (0-1) suffered the loss for Staten Island after he gave up four runs, two earned, on three hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four in his first decision of the season.

The teams combined for only seven hits; four by the Renegades. Whitley went 2-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored, while Fraley went 1-3 with an RBI, a run scored and three stolen bases. The two combined for all four of Hudson Valley's thefts in the game.

The Yankees only had three hits; all of them singles. The game was the season's quickest lasting only two hours and four minutes.

Hudson Valley continues its four-game home-stand with the first of a three-game series tomorrow against Tri-City. First pitch is slated for 7:05. It will be a battle of left-handers as Brock Burke (0-0, 5.19 ERA) will take the hill for the Renegades against Sebastian Kessay (0-0, 4.09 ERA) of the ValleyCats. There will be a fireworks show following the game. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
