Auburn Doubledays News Release

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, won another series with a 5-2 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Thursday night. Auburn has now beaten Mahoning Valley four times in six games his season.

The Doubledays (9-5) got on the board in the top of the second inning off Scrappers starting pitcher Luis Jimenez. Ryan Ripken and Daniel Johnson both singled to put runners on first and second base. David Kerian then reached base on a catcher's interference to load the bases. With Oliver Ortiz batting, Jimenez threw a wild pitch. Ripken scored and Johnson also scored when catcher Gian Paul Gonzalez made an errant throw to home plate. Kerian advanced to third base on the play as Auburn took a 2-0 lead. Ortiz struck out, but Luis Vilorio singled to score Kerian and give the Doubledays a three-run advantage, 3-0.

Auburn extended its lead in the fourth inning. With one out, Ortiz walked. Vilorio then reached base on a bunt single to put runners on first and second with one out. Dalton Dulin worked a walk to load the bases for Blake Perkins. Perkins grounded into a fielder's choice, in which Ortiz was out at home plate, but Vilorio was safe at third, Dulin was safe at second, and Perkins reached first. Clayton Brant then hit a two-run single to center field to score Vilorio and Dulin to give the Doubledays a 5-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley (3-10) scored one run in the seventh inning and one run in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough as Auburn won its ninth game of the season, 5-2.

The Doubledays will travel to West Virginia to take on the Black Bears in the first game of a three-game series on Friday night. Right-hander Wilber Pena will be on the mound for the Doubledays. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
