Wranglers sweep Hooks
May 31, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(WICHITA, Kan.) - With 17 games remaining in the first half, the race for first in the Texas League South is definitely on. The Hooks dropped a pair of games in Wichita Wednesday night, while Midland and Frisco both posted wins. Corpus Christi's lead over Midland has been trimmed to 1½ games, while the surging RoughRiders are now just 3 games off the pace.
The Hooks dropped the opener at Wichita 7-5, a disappointing result given that the Hooks carried a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. Corpus Christi built that lead with a two-run home run by Hunter Pence in the third and a bases-loaded, Baltimore-chop two-run single by Osvaldo Fernando in the fourth. A run-scoring single by Josh Anderson pushed the advantage to 5-0.
The Wranglers, who had yet to score a run in the series to that point, erupted for six runs in the home fourth against Hooks' starter Matt Albers (5-2). The big hit in the inning was Alex Gordon's two-out, two-run double, which turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 Wichita lead. The inning also featured an abominable decision by the official scorer, who credited Angel Sanchez with a bunt base hit when in fact he reached first safely on a throwing error by Hooks' catcher Kevin Davidson. The decision made all six runs in the inning earned, which seriously brings into question the validity and integrity of statistics in the Texas League.
The home team also captured the nightcap, 3-2, when Chris Lubanski drilled the game-winning single to right in the bottom of the sixth, plating Adam Keim from third. Keim had opened the inning with a double off the left field fence against reliever Josh Muecke (0-1), who suffered the loss despite a solid effort over 3.1 innings.
Pence homered twice Wednesday night, taking his league leading total to 15. His two homers and three RBI's snapped a seven-game home run and RBI drought for Pence. J.R. House, who played first base in game one and caught game two, collected singles in both games to extend his current hitting streak to 15 games.
The series at Wichita concludes Thursday night when Chance Douglass (3-1, 4.14) toes the slab for the Hooks. He'll be opposed by Wichita's Junior Herndon (4-2, 4.70).
