Tulsa Drillers News Release

It was a good news, bad news story for Steven Register and the Tulsa Drillers Wednesday night in San Antonio. The good news - Register limited the Missions to only one hit in a complete game performance. The bad news - the Missions scored a pair of unearned runs and the Drillers lost the game 2-1.

Register was magnificent on Wednesday, allowing only a third inning double to Oswaldo Navarro. In his eight innings, Register did not strike out a batter and walked only one while allowing the two unearned runs.

San Antonio starter Travis Blackley was also effective, limiting the Drillers to only six hits and one run in six innings.

The Missions first run scored in the third when Luis Oliveros led off and reached on a throwing error by third baseman Christian Colonel. Navarro's double advanced Oliveros to third. Register then helped his cause by fielding a chopper off the bat of Jack Arroyo and throwing Oliveros out at the plate. But with runners at the corners, a groundball by Sebastien Boucher allowed Navarro to cross the plate with the game's first run.

The Drillers answered in the top of the fourth inning. Joe Gaetti led off with a base hit left field, but Erick Monzon threw him out when he tried to stretch it into a double. The play proved to be critical as Joe Koshansky followed with his 12th home run of the year, a line drive just to the right of the scoreboard in right center field.

San Antonio moved back in front in the bottom of the sixth. Arroyo led off with a drive to deep left field that Gaetti dropped on the warning track for a three-base error. After the error, Gaetti made a sensational play as the next batter, Boucher, hit a sinking liner into the gap. The Tulsa left fielder made a diving catch on the drive, but Arroyo was still able to trot home on the sacrifice fly to give the Missions a 2-1 lead.

Tulsa's best chance to tie the game came in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Mike Flannery. Chris Iannetta led off with a single. Jordan Czarniecki followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved pinch runner Doug Bernier into scoring position. With Alvin Colina at the plate, Flannery uncorked a wild pitch that advanced Bernier to third. After the wild pitch, the Missions infield moved in and Colina hit a hard one-hopper that shortstop Navarro leaped high to grab. He held Bernier at third and threw to first for the second out of the inning. Flannery then retired Colonel on a ground ball to third to end the game.

For Register, it was his second complete-game loss of the season. He lost a six-inning outing to Frisco in the first game of a doubleheader earlier this year. With the setback, his record drops to 1-3. Blackley improved to 4-3 with the win, while Flannery gained his first save.

There was other good news for the Drillers on Wednesday, as they remained only one game behind Springfield in the North Division standings. The Cardinals were 4-3 losers in Midland.

Tulsa has now lost two of three games in San Antonio. The two teams will complete their 4-game series Thursday night. Juan Morillo (4-2, 2.76 ERA) will take the mound for the Drillers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.
