Wranglers solidify defense with Chartier, Schoneck

Las Vegas, NV- The Las Vegas Wranglers announced today the team re-signed defenseman Christian Chartier and signed defenseman Scott Schoneck (Shen-Ick).

"Christian Chartier was one of our best players last year", said Wranglers General Manager/ Head Coach Glen Gulutzan. "He competes hard each and every night. He brings some offense to the table and is very sound defensively in his own end. We expect him to be one of our leaders this season."

The 24-year old Chartier enters his fifth season of professional hockey and second season with the Wranglers. Chartier finished eighth on the team in scoring with nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points in 65 games played. Chartier picked up 12 of his assists on the power play, tying for fourth best among the Wranglers. The 6-foot, 210-pound defenseman also scored four times on seven shootout attempts. The St. Lazere, MAN native brings 259 games of experience to the Las Vegas blue line. For his career, Chartier has 21 goals and 66 assists for 87 points to his resume, as well was 135 penalty minutes. Chartier was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 7th Round (#199 overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Scott Shoneck will join the Wranglers from the University of Saskatchewan where he spent the last five years. Scott is the younger brother of former Wranglers Assistant General Manager/Assistant Coach Drew Schoneck. The 26-year old leaves the Huskies as one of the most decorated defenseman in school history. The Abbey, SK native played 153 collegiate games with 30 goals and 67 assists for 97 points. The offensive-defenseman also racked up 276 penalty minutes at the University of Saskatchewan. Schoneck's CIS honors include; First Team All-Canadian in 2005, 2005 Canada West Hockey Outstanding Defenseman, 2005 Canada West First Team All-Star, 2005 Canada West defensive scoring leader, two-time Canada West Second Team All-Star (2004 and 2003). During his senior season, Schoneck led all CIS defenseman with 14 goals and 24 assists for 38 points in 39 games played.

"We have high expectations for Scott", added Gulutzan. "Obviously we know him very well through his brother Drew, who was with us last year as an assistant coach. Scott has the ability to help us out offensively, especially on the power play. Scott is capable of playing well defensively and he has a little bit of edge when it comes to playing physical."

Prior to his college playing days, Schoneck played professionally for the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Central Hockey League. Schoneck played in 34 games with two goals and seven assists for nine points, as well as 29 penalty minutes. Schoneck left the team to play collegiately. From 1995-2000, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman played for the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL. Schoneck captained the team and was selected as a WHL All-Star his final season in Moose Jaw. During that season, Schoneck scored 13 goals and added 44 assists for 57 points in 72 games played.

The Wranglers will open the 2005-06 home season at the Orleans Arena on Tuesday, October 25th at 7:05 pm against the Utah Grizzlies.
