Arkansas Travelers News Release

Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, Wichita, KS - Mitch Maier hit a tie-breaking three-run homer (3) in the fifth inning and the Wichita Wranglers (1-6) held on for a 7-6 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (4-3). Maier took RHP Allen Buckley deep over the right field wall to give Wichita a 7-4 lead going into the sixth inning. The Travs would close the gap to just one run and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the eighth inning, but RHP Ryan Braun struck out Aaron Peel to end the inning. Braun then struck out the side in the ninth to close the game. Travs RHP Steven Shell (1-1) was unable to hold an early 3-0 first inning lead allowing four unearned runs in the bottom of the first. He left in the fifth inning with two men on base and took the loss. Wichita LHP Ryan Snare (1-0) earned the win with five innings of work allowing four runs and five hits. Wranglers 3B Alex Gordon finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Arkansas 1B Mike Eylward hit two doubles and knocked in two runs. Travs C Brent Del Chiaro hit a solo home run (1).

Peel began the Travs first inning rally with a one-out infield single. Matt Brown doubled to right center to bring Peel home followed by another RBI double by Eylward for a 2-0 Travs lead. DH Casey Smith completed the inning with an RBI single to center for a 3-0 lead.

The Wranglers' first base runner came with one out in the first inning when Travs SS Brandon Wood misplayed a groundball into an error. Angel Sanchez then stole the first of five bases for the Wranglers and scored when Gordon singled to right field. Gordon then stole second base and Maier knocked him in with a single to right. After Maier stole second base, Adam Keim doubled him in to tie the game at 3-3. A walk put another runner on base and Matt Tupman delivered an RBI single to center for a 4-3 Wichita lead.

The Travs managed to tie the game in the fourth inning as Snare plunked David Gates to start the frame. Del Chiaro sacrificed him to second base followed by a bloop single by Eric Rodland to move Gates to third. Dwaine Bacon followed with a roller to second base giving Wichita a chance to end the inning with a double play. However Bacon beat the relay throw allowing Gates to score the tying run.

Shell got into trouble quickly in the fifth inning by hitting Sanchez with a pitch. A one out single by Gordon knocked Shell from the game and the Travs brought Buckley out of the bullpen. Maier smacked Buckley's first pitch over the wall for a 7-4 Wichita lead.

Buckley recovered and ended up with 3.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Wichita had RHP Barry Armitage replace Snare for the sixth inning and allowed Del Chiaro's solo home run to dead center to bring the Travs within 7-5.

Peel led off the seventh inning with a double and a two-out double by Eylward plated him to make it a one-run game.

Braun retired the first two hitters he faced in the eighth, but Rodland reached second with a book rule double and then Bacon was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners up a base, but Braun whiffed Peel to end the threat.

The game was played in 2:56 and the paid attendance was 3,233.

The Travs and Wranglers play the fourth game of this five-game set on Friday night. RHP James Holcomb (0-1, 0.00 ERA) is set to take the hill for Arkansas against Wichita RHP Kyle Middleton (0-1, 4.50 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m.
