April 13, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals belted a season-high five home runs, on their way to a 10-7 victory over the Tulsa Drillers on Thursday night at Drillers Stadium.

Five different players left the yard, as the Cardinals picked up their second road win in three tries, pushing their record over .500 at 4-3. The loss drops Tulsa to 5-2, just one game up on Springfield in the Texas League's North Division.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Cody Haerther hit his first homer of the year, an opposite-field two-run shot to left-center, making it 2-1.

The Drillers battled back in the bottom of the second, getting a pair of unearned runs against Cards starter Chris Lambert.

Springfield tied the game at 3-3 in the third, on Reid Gorecki's second of the year, a solo shot to left field. The Redbirds got two more in the fourth, taking a 5-3 lead. Rico Washington's team-leading fourth homer made it 4-3. Iker Franco knocked in Cody Haerther with an RBI single, as the Cards took a two-run lead.

Tulsa again rallied to tie it in the fourth, as Matt Macri's two-run home run to left evened the game at 5-5.

Cody Haerther, who finished the night with a three-hit game, picked up an RBI double in the fifth against Tulsa reliever Alberto Arias (1-1),giving the Cards the lead for good at 6-5. Matt Dryer followed with a two-run mammoth home run to left field, his first of the year, making it 8-5.

Tulsa's Joe Gaetti, the son of former St. Louis Cardinal Gary Gaetti, hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth off Lambert, making it 8-6.

Iker Franco connected in the seventh for a two-run homer, his second of the year, making it a four-run lead at 10-6.

The Springfield bullpen was good again on Thursday night, as Andy Cavazos held the lead with two scoreless innings. Rich Scalamandre was touched for a run in the eighth, the first that he's allowed this year, as Tulsa pulled to within three at 10-7.

In the ninth Mark Worrell retired the first two hitters before running into trouble. The defense struggled behind Worrell, as Jarrett Hoffpauir misplayed what should have been the last out, a pop up on the infield by Jodan Czarniecki. The wind helped blow the ball out of Hoffpauir's reach, allowing the inning to continue. Pinch-hitter Jud Thigpen followed with a slow roller to third. Rico Washington fielded it cleanly but threw low to first baseman Matt Dryer, putting runners at first and third. Worrell buckled down though, earning his second save of the year by striking out Chris Iannetta.

Lambert (1-0) got the win for the Cardinals, going five innings for the second straight start. He allowed six runs, but only four were earned. The right-hander struck out three, but walked four men.

The Cards and Drillers will meet for game four of the series on Friday night. Stuart Pomeranz will look to make it two straight wins, as he throws for the Cardinals. Tulsa will go with right-hander Marc Kaiser (0-0). Game time from Drillers Stadium in Tulsa is 7:05pm.

The Cardinals return to Hammons Field this Sunday for a ten-game home stand against Wichita and Tulsa. Sunday is another Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday as kids will receive free Ice Cream before the game thanks to Hiland Dairy. Tickets are always available at (417) 863-2143 and at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
