Pence delivers big, again

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - In just their second series of the year the Hooks have accomplished something that took them until June 8-10 of last year, a 3-game winning streak. An enthusiastic crowd of 7,122 piled into Whataburger Field for Thirsty Thursday to watch the boys deliver a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders.

The fireworks came early this week as right fielder Hunter Pence provided all the sparks the Hooks would need to prevail, going two-for-four with two doubles and two runs. Both runs came after doubles by Pence, followed by ground balls advancing Pence, and finished off with wild pitches that sent Pence across the plate.

The first wild pitch came courtesy of Frisco starter Nick Masset, who allowed only two hits in seven innings. But the explosions came after Pence scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth off of reliever Jesse Chavez's wild pitch to Jared Sandberg.

Not to be overlooked was Hooks' starter Matt Albers, who brought his A-game to the mound for his second straight start. Albers pitched seven masterful innings, allowing only one run on four hits, striking out eight in the no decision. The lone run came in the fourth inning when an error by second baseman Jonny Ash scored Frisco's Nate Gold, who led off the inning with a base on balls.

Paul Estrada picked up the victory for the Hooks, tossing two scoreless and hitless innings. Hooks' catcher J.R. House finished the day one-for-four and extended his hitting streak to seven games in the process.

The Hooks will take on the RoughRiders Friday night at 7:05 pm with fireworks and an appearance by the Budweiser Clydesdales following the game. RHP Mitch Talbot (0-0, 1.50) will start for the Hooks and RHP Jose Diaz (0-0, 0.00) for Frisco.
