
Wranglers Down Grizzlies in Shootout, 2-1

Las Vegas, Nev- The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Utah Grizzlies Wednesday night at the Maverik Center. Goaltender Michael Ouzas led the way for the Wranglers as he denied all five shots he faced in the shootout earning him the first start of the night recognition. Ouzas also turned away 33 of the 34 shots he faced in regulation and overtime improving his record to 18-15-2. Utah goalie Andrew Engelage allowed one goal on the 27 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, and he allowed one goal on the four shots he saw in the shootout. Engelage takes the loss and falls to 19-11-5 on the season. Ryan Huddy tallied both goals for the Wranglers, one in regulation and the only goal in the shootout, for either team. Former Wrangler Hugo Carpentier tallied the lone regulation goal for the Grizzlies in the loss. Neither team could capitalize on their identical three power play opportunities. The loss drops the Grizzlies to 32-27-7 with 71 total points. The win ends the Wranglers six-game skid as they improve to 36-25-5 with 77 total points.
Wednesday night's game was scarce for goals as both goaltenders held their ground. The first period saw only one goal, from Ryan Huddy. He netted his team leading twenty-seventh goal of the season at 7:12 of the first period assisted by Blair Riley and Tyler Mosienko. After one period the Wranglers were on top 1-0 but had been outshot 10-6.
Neither team could tally in the second period but they matched each other with a dozen shots apiece.
Hugo Carpentier tied the game at the 16:13 mark of the third period assisted by Paul Mcllveen and Brendan Milnamow. Regulation expired with the Grizzlies and the Wranglers knotted at one.
Neither team netted in the overtime frame but the Grizzlies did outshout the Wranglers 4-2.
The Grizzlies shot first in the shootout but it did not matter as Ouzas was ready to stop all five attempts. Brett Parnham, Paul Mcllveen, Kevin Deeth, Shea Guthrie, and Hugo Carpentier were all denied in the shootout by Ouzas. Blair Riley and Blake Gallagher were both turned away by Engelage in round one and two of the shootout. Ryan Huddy tallied the only goal in the shootout during the third round to give Las Vegas the 2-1 lead. Tyler Mosienko shot in the fourth round but was turned away by Engelage. Ouzas stepped up and made one final save in the fifth round to boost the Wrangles to the 2-1 win in Utah.
The Wranglers now head to Bakersfield for a two-game series starting this Friday at Rabobank Arena.
The Las Vegas Wranglersé are the ECHL affiliate to the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes and the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage.
