Trenton Devils News Release
Elmira, NY - Just 22 seconds after surrendering a one-goal third-period lead, the Elmira Jackals got a goal by A.J. Perry and went on to beat the Trenton Devils, 4-2, Wednesday at First Arena.
Improving to 32-26-6-3, the win clinches a season-series victory for the Jackals, while the Devils fall to 24-36-2-6, their third loss in four games.
Even though Perry's goal proved to be the game-winning tally, the Jackals' league-leading offense was ignited by the first professional points of four different players, including Martin Moucha and Andrew Favot who each contributed two points. The winning goalie was Marco Cousineau, who improved to 7-3-0 against the Devils, making 36 saves on 38 shots.
The only Devils to score past Cousineau were Jeff Prough and J.S. Berube, while Ryan Ginand moved to within five points of Scott Bertoli's single-season franchise scoring record, notching his 74th point of the season with an assist. Returned on loan from Albany Wednesday, Dave Caruso made 31 saves in a losing effort in his first start for Trenton since March 9.
After getting shut out twice in the previous three games, the Devils wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Wednesday, as Prough scored just 2:51 into the first period. Prough's goal was scored when he corralled a carom off the end-boards on his forehand, faked to his backhand, and quickly shot into the corner of the net. Prough's 21st of the season is his first for Trenton since February 5, having spent 21 of 22 intervening contests with Albany. Ginand and Dave Leaderer assisted.
The Devils lead stood for less than four minutes, as Martin Moucha intercepted a clearing attempt by Caruso and fired into an open net to tie the game, 1-1, at 6:16 of the first.
Just under 10 minutes after tying the game, the Jackals took a 2-1 lead when Drew Paris blasted a shot from the right point through Caruso for his fifth goal of the season.
Elmira maintained its lead into the third period, but J.S. Berube collected the rebound of a Chris Berenguer shot and deposited his 11th goal of the season, on the backhand, to tie the game, 2-2. Prough picked up the secondary assist for his 10th multi-point game of the year.
However, Perry restored Elmira's lead just 22 seconds after Berube tied the game and Vinny Geonnetti added an insurance goal at 10:22, as the Jackals cruised to a 4-2 victory.
With four games remaining in the 2010-11 season, the Devils return to Sun National Bank Center to begin their final homestand of the season against the Kalamazoo Wings Friday at 7:00 p.m.
