Worcester Red Sox News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Six first inning runs sparked another commanding win for the Worcester Red Sox (22-13) over the Syracuse Mets (11-24), this time a 13-7 victory to complete a six-game series sweep at NBT Bank Stadium.
After scoring six times in the first, the WooSox added two in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and two in the ninth on the way to a season-best 13-run performance. Over six games, Worcester outscored Syracuse 57-23, outhit them 66-45 and cracked 17 home runs. After setting a modern-day record for a Red Sox Triple-A affiliate with the team's ninth consecutive road victory last night, Sunday's victory extended that streak to 10.
One day after Jarren Duran led off a WooSox win with a homer, Jeter Downs began the day with two-run shot as the second batter of the game against Syracuse starter Jesús Reyes. The homer-one of two on the day for Downs-was followed by three straight singles, including an RBI knock from Connor Wong. After a strikeout, Jonathan Arauz tripled home Wong, and Jack Lopez brought in Arauz with a single of his own. Six first inning runs tied a season-high for runs in a single frame, a mark Worcester set on June 4 versus Rochester.
Johan Mieses brought the next two home with a home run deep over the left field wall in the second. The long ball marked Mieses' third with the WooSox and 14th on the season, a total that ranks second in all of Minor League Baseball. An inning later, Duran blasted a two-run shot of his own, his third homer in four days to give the road team a 10-0 lead.
Worcester added another in the fifth behind a Franchy Cordero RBI double, the seventh starter to record an RBI as part of a 15-hit day for the team. Michael Gettys became the eighth man with an RBI with a solo homer in the ninth, and Downs crushed his second two batters later.
Four pitchers threw for the WooSox after scheduled starter Ryan Weber was called up to the big club, highlighted by two-inning, scoreless outings from Austin Brice and Matt Hall. Syracuse's runs came on a Patrick Mazeika single that brought home two in the third, a pair of homers in the fifth from Khalil Lee and Mazeika, a solo shot by David Rodriguez in the eighth and a single and error in the ninth.
The WooSox return home Tuesday to begin a six-game series at Polar Park against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are available for each game of the homestand at WooSox.com or by calling 508-500-8888. Television coverage is live on NESN+, and radio coverage starts at 6:15 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. Raynel Espinal (5-1, 3.83), who has won five in a row, gets the start for Worcester.
