Woodies Use Seven-Run Seventh To Salvage Finale From Pelicans

Kinston, N.C. - Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, the Woodies sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven times, to take the finale from the Pelicans, and salvage a game in the three game series, winning, 7-4, Thursday.

Down East (24-10) matches their largest comeback win of the season, while scoring the most run in any inning this year. They had tallied just one hit over their first six frames against the Pelicans (12-22).

Ryan Dorow led off the seventh with a single, and then Sam Huff doubled two batters later, for his first Carolina League hit off of Brendan King (loss, 0-2). Yohel Pozo then singled to center to drive in Dorow, and Tyreque Reed singled down the left field line to plate Huff. Yanio Perez was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Yonny Hernandez then followed with a two run single up the middle, scoring Pozo, and Eric Jenkins, who came in to pinch run for Reed, tying the game at four. With the bases reloaded, Anderson Tejeda bounced a high chopper back to the mound for an RBI groundout to put Down East ahead 5-4. Dorow, batting for the second time in the inning then bounced a single back up the middle to score two off of Manny Rondon, and push the Woodies out to a 7-4 lead.

Reed Anderson started the ballgame for the Woodies and went four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. He walked two, and struck out five.

The Pelicans got on the board in the third inning when Carlos Sepulveda walked, advanced to second on a groundout, and to third on a balk, and then came into score on a two out single from Miguel Amaya. Anderson then allowed three more runs in the fourth, when five consecutive Pelicans reached base, highlighted by RBI singles from Kevonte Mitchell and Zach Davis.

Meanwhile, Javier Assad was outstanding for Myrtle Beach. He went six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out six. He retired the final 11 batters he faced, but did not factor in the decision.

Joe Kuzia (win, 1-0) made his first Carolina League appearance, going three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, while Alex Eubanks (save, 1) recorded the final six outs to earn his first save of the year.

The Wood Ducks begin a seven-game road trip on Friday, when they open a three game series with the Winston-Salem Dash. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. with right-hander Jason Bahr (1-0, 1.78) making the start for the Woodies, opposed by dash righty Jake Elliott (3-0, 4.96).
