Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU-June 19, 2011-After being rained out in game one of a two-game away-home set with Eau Claire, the Woodchucks fell to the Express Sunday afternoon by a score of 11-6.
Woodchucks' starter AJ Carman struggled in the early going, allowing a home run in the bottom of the second inning, before allowing the first five batters in the third to reach safely. Already with one run in and the bases loaded, Nick Greene would come on in relief, and allow one runner to reach and hit an RBI on a fielding error, and another runner to come across on a fielder's choice.
The 'Chucks had scored two in the second inning - by way of a Carlos Escobar lead-off double, a fielding error, a walk, a single, and a Seth Batty sacrifice fly - making the score 4-2, Express, headed into the fourth inning.
As Greene was set to begin his second inning of work, the Express' Lawton Langford hit a lead-off double, followed by a runner-moving groundout, and another 'Chucks fielding error to send in one run. After Parker Hipp would draw a walk, Zach Fisher would mash a 2-1 homerun- making the score 8-2, Express.
After moving through a 1-2-3 fourth, the Woodchucks would get back on the board against an Express team that lost three consecutive road games coming in. Seth Batty would walk with one down, before Brian Carroll would advance him to third on a single, allowing Danny Sudorf to send Batty home with an RBI sac-fly.
Mike Gerber, came in leading the Woodchucks in home runs through only five games played, would then take a 3-1 pitch to deep right field for his third homerun, bringing the 'Chucks back to striking distance down 8-5.
Two walks and a pair of singles would plate two more Express runs in the sixth inning, however, seeming putting the game out of reach.
The following seventh and eighth innings would prove rather uneventful, as third-baseman-made-pitcher Garrett Yrigoyen would continue to impress on the mound, allowing only three hits and fanning two heading into the ninth. Mahlon Zimmerman, who picked up the three-inning save, came on in the seventh and set the 'Chucks down in order into the ninth.
Each team would add one in the final frame, as the Express scored Alex Allbritton - who hit a single - from first base on a following Ryan Schober double, and the 'Chucks one as pinch hitter Alex Grunenwald drew a walk, moved to second as Seth Batty reached on an error, and scored by way of a Brain Carroll single.
Both runs would prove inconsequential, as the 'Chucks fell 11-6 and dropped to 7-10 on the season, while the Express improved to 11-7.
The Express produced 11 runs off of 15 hits, two fielding errors, and six free-passes, while the 'Chucks mustered six runs off only five hits.
Sunday's game will end the Express-Woodchucks first-half slate, as the 'Chucks go on to play the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters for an away-home series Monday, before returning to Athletic Park on Tuesday.
