Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 19, 2011. The Madison Mallards capped off their three-game homestand with a thrilling 5-4 win over Wisconsin Rapids in front of 6,349 ecstatic fans Sunday evening.
The win was the first game to go into extra innings this season for the Mallards, who improve to 11-7 on the season.
Scoring started early for Madison, as Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) scored on a bases loaded walk in the second inning. After Mike McQuillan (Iowa) homered to deep right field in the third, the Mallards held a 2-0 advantage.
The Ducks would score one more in the fifth on an RBI groundout by newest Mallard Willie Argo (Illinois), to go up by three.
Rapids would counter in the top of inning number six as Kyle Peterson (Eastern Michigan) drove in Justin Jirschele (Wisconsin - Stevens Point) on a groundout.
The Mallards added one more in the bottom of the sixth on a Jake Page (Madison College) single. The hit gave Page his first RBI since joining the Mallards a few days ago.
Wisconsin Rapids quickly jumped on their opportunities in the seventh inning. A single by Cody Koback (Wisconsin - Stevens Point) scored two after Mallards' reliever Zach White (Wake Forest) walked a pair of batters.
The scoring ceased until the top of the ninth, when Curtis Frisbie (Nevada - Reno) scored on a wild pitch. The run would send the game into extras after the Mallards were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.
The Rafters did not score in the top of the tenth off of new Mallards' pitcher Cam Booser (Oregon State), and after Andrew Barna (Davidson) walked and stole second to lead off the inning. Tyler Jones (Long Island) pinch-hit for Page batting third in the inning and reached on an error by Rafters' third baseman Brandon Hohl (Illinois), who coincidentally started the game at shortstop. Barna scored on the error to provide the winning margin.
Barna led the Mallards offensively going 2-for-2 with three walks. He also scored twice and stole three total bases. McQuillan and Theunissen also tallied multiple hits in the win.
Koback was the offensive star for the Rafters, going 1-for-4 with the two RBI. The only Rapids player to collect more than one hit on the day was Hohl. In all, six players had a hit for Rapids, who fell to 3- 15 on the season.
Madison starter Joel Effertz (Madison College) did well on the mound, although he did not factor in the decision. Through six innings, Effertz gave up three hits, one run, walked one, and struck out five. He threw only 84 pitches before being taken out.
White came in to replace Effertz in the seventh, but did not record an out. He surrendered two earned runs before Travis Parker (St. Louis) came in and got the Ducks out of a huge jam in the seventh. Booser replaced Matt Milroy (Illinois), who blew a save opportunity in the ninth by throwing a two-out wild pitch, allowing Rapids to tie the game. Booser (1-0) pitched the tenth to earn his first win of the season.
Rafters' starter Mike Russo (Kean University) had his best outing of the season. He went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. The junior right-handed hurler walked four and struck out two.
Taking the loss was Kevin Wild (Valparaiso). Wild was just that in the tenth inning, allowing the winning run on a wild pitch. He is now 0-3 on the season.
The game marks the second time this season that the Mallards have swept the Rafters. The Ducks won their first three games of the season at Witter Park, and with the two-game sweep this weekend, the team is now 5-0 against Wisconsin Rapids this season.
Up next for the Mallards is a three-game series in Waterloo against the Bucks. Game one will be played on Monday at 6:35 p.m. The team will not come back to the "Duck Pond" until Thursday, June 23rd when the team plays the La Crosse Loggers at 7:05 p.m.
