Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - June 19, 2011. The Madison Mallards will take on the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Sunday in a 3:05 afternoon matinee at the "Duck Pond."

The Mallards will be going for a two-game sweep and a 5-0 start against Rapids this season after a come from behind victory over the Rafters Saturday.

Taking the mound looking to cap off the homestand for Madison is Joel Effertz (Madison College). Effertz has had a good season up to this point with a 1-0 record in two appearances. He has allowed only two runs through thirteen innings pitched while walking four and striking out fifteen.

Also looking to contribute is Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin). Owen was the hero in Saturday's contest with two home runs. With his performance, he moved into the lead on the team in terms of individual batting average amongst qualifying hitters (2.7 at-bats per team game) with a .345 clip through seventeen games.

"(Yesterday) felt good," Owen said after the win. "We haven't been playing as well of late, so having the kind of game we had was important, and we're going to get back on track."

Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) is also on a hot streak, hitting in eleven straight games.

Taking the ball for Rapids is Mike Russo (Kean University), looking to end the team's five-game losing streak. Russo was roughed up in his first and only outing of the season, going only one-third of an inning and allowing three runs (two earned) in Rapids' 7-3 loss to Green Bay on June 14th.

Sunday's Father's Day game will also pay tribute to all of the dads in attendance. Stoddards' Country Grove Market will be sponsoring the Mallards' Father's Day celebrations, and the first 500 dads through the gate will receive grill gloves.

It will also be Remington Products Night and Madison Children's Museum Day.

In the News Jordan Owen was named Northwoods League "Player of the Night" after Saturday's game. It was the first time this season that Owen has been awarded the nightly honor.

The Mallards will welcome outfielder Willie Argo (Illinois) to the team on Sunday. Argo has signed a temporary contract and will be in action wearing number 24. For the Fighting Illini this past season, Argo hit .270, scored 48 times, and was 25-for-35 in stolen base attempts.

Madison also activated pitchers Cameron Booser (Oregon State) and Jonathon Crawford (Florida) Sunday. Booser arrives after Oregon State was knocked off in the NCAA Super Regionals and will don the number 10 uniform. Crawford will wear number 8 after coming to Madison from Gainesville. He did not travel to the College World Series with the Gators so he could begin his summer assignment early with the Mallards.
