Carolina Mudcats News Release
KINSTON, N.C. - The Mudcats rallied for two runs in the ninth with run-scoring hits from Jheremy Vargas and Daniel Guilarte, but Down East's Yosy Galan answered moments later with a walk-off three-run home run as the Wood Ducks defeated the Mudcats 4-3 on Friday night at Grainger Stadium.
The game was tied at 1-1 entering the ninth before Vargas and Guilarte put the Mudcats (6-6) up 3-1 with back-to-back run-scoring hits off Down East (6-6) reliever Adrian Rodriguez (W, 1-0). Jadher Areinamo started the late rally with a single to right-center before scoring on Vargas' RBI double in the next at-bat. Guilarte then singled to bring in Vargas from second.
With Carolina freshly on top 3-1, reliever Shane Smith entered the game and was immediately greeted by an Ian Moller double to right. Smith (L, 1-2)(BS, 2) then walked a batter and struck out two straight before giving up Galan's game-winner. The home run was Galan's second in as many games for the Wood Ducks.
Nate Peterson started for the Mudcats and scattered two hits while striking out seven over four scoreless innings. Carolina led 1-0 throughout Peterson's start as they scored a run in the first on a two-out RBI single from Matt Wood. The hit stretched Wood's current hitting streak to five straight games. Wood also went 2-for-4 while recording his third straight multi-hit game.
Jakob Brustoski followed and pitched the fifth where he gave up a run while losing Carolina's 1-0 lead. That lone run scored after Danyer Cueva singled, moved to third on two Brustoski wild pitches and then scored on a RBI hit from Tucker Mitchell. The game locked up at 1-1 in the fifth, but would stay that way until both teams put rallies together in the ninth.
Quinton Low entered in the sixth and would go on to work through the eighth with six strikeouts, a walk and one hit while keeping the game locked at 1-1. Smith then worked the ninth and lost Carolina's newly gained 3-1 advantage after giving up Galan's walk-off blast.
The loss snapped Carolina's win streak at four straight games and cut their lead in the series to 3-1.
The Mudcats and Wood Ducks will continue their series on Saturday night at Grainger Stadium with RHP Alexander Vallecillo starting for the Mudcats and RHP Aidan Curry starting for Down East.
