KINSTON, NC - The Down East Wood Ducks (42-18) got a walk off fielder's choice in the bottom of the 10th to defeat the Frederick Keys (28-30) 2-1 on Thursday night at Grainger Stadium. It was the second time the Keys had been victimized by a walk-off in 2019. With the setback and a loss by the Blue Rocks, the orange and black remain 8.5 games back of first place with 11 games to play.

Starting with a runner at second base to open the 10th, the Wood Ducks saw the Keys intentionally walked Ryan Dorrow to set up a double play. Instead, the home team got a deep flyout by Diosbel Arias off Diógenes Almengo to move both runners to second and third base. That brought up Sam Huff who hit a groundball to short with the infield drawn in. Sean Miller picked and threw home from a knee, but Leody Taveras slid in ahead of the tag of Jean Carrillo to give Down East the win.

The lone run for the Keys came on a solo home run by Ryan Ripken to right field off Josh Advocate. Leaving the bat at 109 mph, it was Ripken's third home run of the season.

Both teams struggled situationally, with the two sides going a collective 1-for-16 with men in scoring position and leaving a combined 19 runners on base. After stranding five on base through the first four innings, Down East plated its first run in the fourth on a Yonny Hernandez single that scored Yohel Pozo from third.

Joe Kuzia (2-0) earned the win, working two scoreless innings to go with three strikeouts. Almengo (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up an unearned run over two innings. He walked one and struck out one.

The Keys and Wood Ducks play the second game of their series on Friday night. Right-hander David Lebron (2-0, 2.87) starts for Frederick against Down East left-hander Sal Mendez (2-0, 2.66). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.
