Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - Down East's (15-16) offense could not solve Myrtle Beach (13-18) starter Keegan Thompson in a 3-0 shutout defeat. The offense was contained to just six hits, but Alex Kowalczyk and Brendon Davis found themselves on base multiple times in the loss.
The Pelicans scored in three consecutive innings from frames two to four. Emerson Martinez had the start and contained all six hits he allowed to those three innings. He retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced after completing a season-high seven innings.
Davis knocked a single in the fourth inning for the Woodies' first hit of the game. Kowalczyk would draw a walk after him with only one out, but both were left stranded.
The Woodies did not manage an extra-base hit in the loss, but six of nine starters reached base. Out of the bullpen, Kaleb Fontenot was the lone man called upon for the final two frames. He struck out two in his first game in five days and recorded two scoreless innings.
A rally formed in the ninth with one out with an Andretty Cordero single and Matt Whatley getting hit by a pitch. Blaine Prescott would fly out to right, but Cordero was doubled off at second base after venturing too far from the bag to end the game.
Game two of the series comes on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. with Edgar Arredondo on the hill. The right-hander starts opposite Tyson Miller for the Pelicans. Tune in to the pregame show at 6:45 on WRNS-AM 960 The Bull or streamed through the TuneIn Radio app.
