ICYMI: The Wood Ducks collected six doubles, a triple and two home runs while totaling 15 hits during a 9-3 series finale victory against the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats came up a game shy of the sweep with the loss, but ended up with a series victory after taking two of the three from Down East.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Mudcats set a new season high for hits allowed at home after giving up 15 hits to the Wood Ducks yesterday at Five County Stadium. The Wood Ducks also totaled nine extra-base hits in yesterday's victory, setting a new high for extra-base hits allowed in a game by Mudcats pitchers.
VS. BC: The Mudcats and Buies Creek Astros face off today in game one of a three game series at Jim Perry Stadium on the campus of Campbell University. Buies Creek took three of four versus the Mudcats back in April (4/19-4/22) and lead the season series 3-1. Tonight's game is the fifth of 28 total meetings between the two teams.
MUDCATS STARTER: LHP Cam Roegner has the start for the Mudcats in tonight's series opener at Buies Creek. Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League with a 1.35 ERA over five starts and 26.2 innings pitched so far this season. Roegner has also struck out 21, walked nine and allowed 29 hits while going 2-1 this season. He last pitched on 5/2 in Myrtle Beach where he allowed two runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings pitched. He also walked three, struck out two and left seven men on base while suffering his first loss of the season. The Brewers selected Roegner in the 22nd round of the 2016 draft out of Bradley University.
OPP STARTER: RHP Brandon Bailey starts for the Astros in tonight's series opener against the Mudcats. Bailey enters tonight's outing at 0-2 and has pitched to a 5.03 ERA over five games and three starts this season. Overall, Bailey has totaled 34 strikeouts, 11 walks and 13 runs allowed over 19.2 innings this season. He has also held opponents to a .191 average against. He last pitched on May 2 at Down East where he allowed five runs on four hits over two and 2/3 innings pitched. Bailey was acquired by the Houston Astros in November 2017 as part of a trade with the Oakland Athletics (the A's received OF Ramon Laureano). He was originally selected by the A's in the 6th round of the 2016 draft out of Gonzaga.
HEATING UP: Keston Hiura is batting .386/.413/.614 with 17 hits, 10 runs, four doubles, two home runs, six RBI and a 1.027 OPS over his last 10 games. He's also batting a team best .287 with a team high 32 hits, 16 runs, seven doubles and a team best nine multi-hit games (27 games played) this season.
WALK THIS WAY: The Mudcats pitching staff has combined to walk a Carolina League and Minor League Baseball high 148 batters so far this season. Carolina is also second in MiLB in BB/9 (5.2) having walked 148 over 30 games and 256.2 innings this season. Only the Great Lakes Loons (Low-A, Midwest League) have a higher BB/9 (5.49) than the Mudcats so far this season (141 BB, 256.2 IP).
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 54 more strikeouts than hits (294 SO, 240 H) so far this season. Since 1991, only the 2017 Mudcats and 2007 Mudcats finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits last season (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
WHERE THEY RANK: Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in lowest earned run average (1.35)... Trey Supak (1.97) is 5th in the CL in lowest earned run average. Supak is also 4th in WHIP (1.00), 5th in average against and tied for 5th in innings (32.0)... Chase Williams leads the CL in games (12) and games finished (10)... Nattino Diplan is 2nd in the CL lead in most games (11)... Luis Aviles Jr. is tied for 2nd in the CL in stolen bases (11)... Max McDowell leads CL catchers in most caught steals (19) and caught stealing efficiency (.559).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (19) and caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.559) for catchers with at least 20 attempts against... McDowell caught four base runners attempting to steal and picked off another at first on Opening Night, 4/5 vs. Winston-Salem. He and the Mudcats also allowed six stolen bases on 4/19 vs. BC.
ALUMNI REPORT: Joey Meneses (2015) was named the International League (Triple-A) player of the week today after totaling a league best 1.531 OPS over seven games between April 30 and May 6. Meneses went 13-for-25 with six runs, five doubles, two home runs and eight RBI while batting .520/.571/.960 last week.
