Wood Ducks Offense Kept Quiet, Forced To Settle For Series Split

June 30, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Down East Wood Ducks News Release

Lynchburg, Va. - The Wood Ducks scored a run in the top of the first inning, but were held scoreless the rest of the way, falling 2-1 to the Hillcats, and setting for a spit in the four game series.

Down East (6-5, 56-25) opened the scoring on a Diosbel Arias home run to right in the first off of Kirk McCarty (win, 1-2). It was Arias' second homer of the season and it got the Woodies on the board first.

It represented the only blemish on McCarty's line as the lefty gave up just the one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out seven, and did not walk a batter.

Lynchburg (6-5, 38-40) jumped ahead in the third inning. Steven Kwan and Tyler Friis led off the frame against Collin Wiles (loss, 1-1) with back-to-back singles, and scored on RBI groundouts from Tyler Freeman and Oscar Gonzalez respectively.

Wiles worked 4.2 innings in his second start of the year. He gave up two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out four.

Scott Engler went the duration for the Wood Ducks on the mound, and enjoyed his best outing of the year. Engler struck out six, allowing just a walk and a single in 3.1 innings in relief.

The Wood Ducks threatened late, but were unable to capitalize. Pinch hitters Yanio Perez and Sam Huff each singled in the eighth but neither came around to score. Then in the ninth, Yohel Pozo singled, and Cutis Terry doubled to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, but Yapson Gomez (save, 2) responded with a pair of strikeouts to close out the win for Lynchburg.

The Wood Ducks return home Monday to begin a three-game home stand against the Winston-Salem Dash. Down East will send right-hander Alex Eubanks (6-2, 2.63) to the mound to face off with Dash left-hander Konnor Pilkington (1-3, 6.09). It's Dogs and Dogs night at Grainger Stadium, where fans can bring their dog for just $1, while also enjoying $1 hot dogs. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
