AMAYA GRAND SLAM, BULLPEN LEAD BIRDS TO VICTORY
Miguel Amaya's first-career grand slam paced the Myrtle Beach Pelicans offensively in a 6-4 win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Saturday from Segra Stadium. Following a Zach Davis RBI single in the third to make it 2-1 Fayetteville, Amaya roped a grand slam to left to give the Pelicans the lead. Jonathan Arauz then blasted a two-run homer of his own to cut the Pelicans' lead to one, but Jimmy Herron added on with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. Manny Rondon, Manny Rodriguez and Garrett Kelly combined for 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
HEY, THAT LOOKS LIKE A WINNING STREAK
After the Birds snapped a tough six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win on Tuesday and the Birds have now won five in a row. It is the first time the Pelicans have won five-straight games since May 3-8 when they won five consecutively. With a win on Saturday, the Pelicans won back-to-back series for the first time since beating Salem and Down East from May 3-9. The Pelicans have not won six contests in a row since July 10-16, 2018 when they won two games against Carolina at home and swept Down East in a four-game series.
LOOK AT ALL THOSE RECORDS
The Pelicans set plenty of records on Thursday in their 12-6 win over the Woodpeckers. They set season highs in hits (21) and doubles (six) while the Birds tied a season high in runs (12) and home runs (three). Since the Pelicans became a Cubs affiliate in 2015, the 21 hits is the most the Pelicans have collected in a single game. Individually, the Pelicans set six season highs. Zach Davis set Pelicans season highs in hits (five), runs (four), doubles (three) and extra-base hits (three). He also tied franchise records with his five hits (10th player to do so and the first since Bryant Flete on August 22, 2017) and three doubles (14th player to do so and first since Gleyber Torres on June 3, 2016). D.J. Wilson became the first Pelicans player since Tyler Alamo on August 19, 2017 to hit two home runs in a game. Wilson also tied the season high for the Birds with five RBIs in a game.
STRAIGHT FLEXING
After a season-long seven-game stretch without a home run, the Pelicans have hit 12 home runs in their last 11 games. Over that span, five different players have sent at least two balls out of the ballpark. Cam Balego has three over that span, while Tyler Payne, D.J. Wilson, Luke Reynolds and Aramis Ademan have two. Miguel Amaya hit a grand slam on Saturday for his first home run since May 20. Only Fayetteville (13) has more than the Pelicans' 12 home runs since June 16. The Pelicans and Woodpeckers are tied for the league high with 11 second-half home runs. Balego now has eight long balls on the season. That mark is second on the team behind Kevonte Mitchell's nine.
LIGHTNING ON HIS FEET
Outfielder Zach Davis has made a name for himself on the bases in his career. Davis leads the league with 27 stolen bases. Because he has just played in 55 games, he is averaging 0.49 stolen bases per game. He has stolen two bases in the same game three times in 2019. A staple in the leadoff spot for the Pelicans, Davis has made 42 starts in the top spot in the order. The former Texas Tech Red Raider led all of the Cubs farm system with 38 stolen bases in 2018. On the offensive side, Davis has been on fire as well, hitting .400 (10-for-25) over his last seven games.
WHEN LOADED, IT'S DANGEROUS
After the last three series, the Pelicans have been much better with the bases loaded offensively, but they have still struggled on the hill. This season, opponents have a 1.309 OPS with three doubles, two triples and five grand slams. With the D.J. Wilson grand slam on Thursday and Miguel Amaya's single on Friday and grand slam on Saturday, the Pelicans at the plate now have a .670 OPS with the bases loaded with four doubles, no triples and two grand slams. In 57 at-bats, opponents have scored 79 bases-loaded runs and the Pelicans have only scored 51 runs in 63 bases-loaded at-bats. The Woodpeckers have now hit four grand slams against the Pelicans this season. Grant Fennell and Amaya lead the Birds with eight RBIs in those situations.
BULLPEN OF GLORY
Over the last seven games, the Birds' bullpen has been solid. The 'pen owns an ERA of 2.16 (6 ER over 25.0 IP) over their last seven contests. Overall, the Pelicans bullpen ERA is 3.93 versus their starter's 4.98 ERA. Garrett Kelly has been strong for the Pelicans, owning a 2.65 ERA over 11 appearances while Ben Hecht leads the Pelicans in outings with 24 while boasting a 2.57 ERA and a team-best four saves.
PELICAN POINTS
Over the five-game winning streak, the Pelicans have hit seven home runs and have hit well with RISP. In those situations, the Pelicans are batting .353 (18-for-51)... Carlos Sepulveda has been on a tear away from home, leading the team with a .315 average in road games this season.
