Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Frederick, MD- Despite Brewer Hicklen's two-run homer and two runs scored the Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped a 5-3 decision to the Frederick Keys on Sunday at Nymeo Field. Trevor Craport's grand slam in the bottom of the third sunk the Blue Crew, who had to settle for a split in their four-game visit to Frederick.

Craport's big blast came against Wilmington starter Austin Cox. The lefty got himself into hot water with a lead-off walk to Patrick Dorrian. Jean Carrillo and Robbie Thorburn followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. Craport didn't waste any time, sending the first pitch he saw soaring over the left-centerfield fence.

Frederick added an insurance tally off Cox in the fifth thanks to another long ball. This time it was J.C. Escarra sneaking a liner over the wall in right-center. Cox was done after that frame. He fanned four and walked one in his first Advanced-A loss.

Wilmington got on the board in the top of the fifth thanks to a Colby Schultz single. The Blue Crew then made things interesting in the ninth. Hicklen launched a two-run homer and then Schultz and Sebastian Rivero worked consecutive two-out free passes to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate. Kyle Kasser grounded out though to end the game.

It was emblematic of the day offensively for Wilmington. The Blue Crew went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Diogenes Almengo allowed one run over three frames out of the bullpen to pick up the win for Frederick while Tim Naughton got the final out to nail down his second save of the series.

The Rocks open a brief three-game homestand on Monday as they welcome the Potomac Nationals to town. Kris Bubic hits the hill for Wilmington and first pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. Tickets are available at BlueRocks.com and fans who don't make it to the ballpark can catch all of the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh, on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

The Blue Crew closed out a regular season series for the first time in 2019. Wilmington played its final game against Frederick on Sunday. The Rocks beat one of their closes geographic rivals 10 times in 15 tries, however Wilmington finished just 4-4 at Nymeo Field, which is one of only three sites where the Blue Crew does not have a winning record in 2019. Wilmington has a .500 mark in Frederick, Potomac and Fayetteville, a winning record in six stadiums (including at home) and have not visited Down East yet.

Wilmington wrapped up its road trip to Potomac and Frederick with a 3-4 record. It was the Blue Crew's first losing trip since a journey to Salem May 7-9 when they dropped two of three games. The Rocks still possess the second-best road mark in the Carolina League at 28-15.

Despite the sub-.500 record on its recent road trip Wilmington did provide a power surge at the plate during its time in Potomac and Frederick. The Rocks hit five homers during the trip. Most of the Blue Crew's power has come away from the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium this season with 29 of their 34 homers in 2019 coming on the road.

Wilmington suffered a rare loss under the sun on Sunday. The Rocks fell for only the second time in 14 tries during day games in 2019.
