Down East Wood Ducks News Release

Kinston, North Carolina - The Down East Wood Ducks announced earlier today they have partnered with Lenoir County Public Schools and The Free Press of Kinston on an in-school reading program that will take place at three local schools during the month of May.

The program will feature Wood Ducks players visiting Northeast, Northwest and Southeast elementary schools and reading to third, fourth and fifth grade students. The program leads up to end of year testing that all students will take. Students that pass the test will be entered into a drawing for tickets to a Wood Ducks game in early June and a chance to be recognized for their achievement on the field before the game.

"Reading skills are fundamental to playing any sport so this is a natural fit for us and we can't wait to get started working with Lenoir County Public Schools and the Kinston Free Press on this program," said Wade Howell, Wood Ducks General Manager.

The first of the three reading program visits will take place this Thursday morning, May 3, when Josh Altmann and James Jones of the Wood Ducks visit Northeast Elementary School. The players are scheduled to meet with students at 10 a.m.

"We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the Wood Ducks and the Kinston Free Press to support literacy in the elementary schools," said Dr. Deborah Winings, Director of Elementary Education for LCPS. "Wood Ducks players taking the time to connect with our students in this way will have a positive impact beyond improved literacy skills."
