FREDERICK, MD - The Salem Red Sox saw their recently prolific offense get stifled Wednesday night, suffering a 3-0 shutout against the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.

Salem (15-11) went 0-6 with runners in scoring position and never got a runner past second base in the loss. The Keys (9-17) notched their first win against Salem in 2018 despite going just 1-9 with runners in scoring position. Salem batters drew only one walk and struck out 14 times.

The Keys took the lead first in the bottom of the third against Sox starter Tanner Houck, who gave up a one-out double to Ryan McKenna before Preston Palmeiro took him deep on a fastball. It was Palmeiro's third homer of the year, and it put the Keys ahead 2-0.

Frederick tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh against Salem reliever Joan Martinez, who issued a one-out walk to McKenna. Palmeiro again bit the Red Sox, lining a double to right to score McKenna and extend the lead to 3-0.

Houck gave up two runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings, whiffing one. Martinez surrendered a run on one hit and two walks, fanning three in two innings. Jared Oliver pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts against two hits allowed.

The Sox will aim for a series win Thursday morning, with righty Roniel Raudes taking the ball for Salem against Frederick lefty Brian Gonzalez in the rubber match. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is at 11:00 a.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 10:45 a.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
