Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC - The Carolina Mudcats snapped a four-game losing streak to the Winston-Salem Dash at Five County Stadium backed by a career night from infielder Tony Wolters. A crowd of 3,436 saw the 20-year-old punch through four base hits, and deliver the key hit in the seventh inning.
Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, the Mudcats (14-11, 45-49) scored six in the seventh inning, and held off one final surge from the Dash (13-12, 57-37).
Rob Nixon (1-0) earned the win in his Mudcats debut, retiring one batter. He allowed two runs on two hits. Jose Flores recorded the final three outs to notch his 15th save.
Terrance Marin (3-3), who had been a shut-down reliever for the Dash all year, was hit for six runs on five hits without recording an out in the seventh.
In the pivotal frame, the Mudcats were jump-started by a double off the bat of Ronny Rodriguez. He crossed home on a base knock by Anthony Gallas, cutting the deficit to 4-2. After a single from Tyler Cannon, Alex Monsalve reached on a throwing error by third baseman Juan Silverio. The error allowed Gallas to score and Cannon to third.
With no outs, trailing 4-3, Wolters delivered his fourth hit of the night on a ground ball into center field. Cannon scored to tie the game, and Monsalve was safe at the plate when catcher Miguel Gonzalez missed the tag on a play at the plate. Delvi Cid and Rodriguez both singled in to vital insurance runs for a 7-4 lead.
Winston-Salem responded with two in the eighth, but could draw no closer.
Mudcats' hurler Michael Goodnight had a terrific outing through six innings, scattering a run on three hits. But the right-hander ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing three run on four hits before he was lifted from the game.
Game three of the series between Carolina and Winston-Salem is set for a noon first pitch at Five County Stadium on Wednesday. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
