Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
DIES AT FIVE: Three pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Wilmington Blue Rocks fell to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Monday night, 2-0. The loss snapped the Blue Crew's longest win streak of the year at five, and snapped a three-game slide for the Pelicans.
POWER FIELDS: On Saturday, Matt Fields hit his ninth homer in 13 games, a smoke shot over the left-field wall that left the park completely. To put it in perspective, he is second on the team in home runs only to Brett Eibner, who has 11. It took Eibner 63 games to hit nine home runs. With two singles last night, Fields has hit .357 over his last 14 games with an OPS of 1.365. Nine of his 20 hits in that time have left the yard.
TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: Myrtle Beach recorded its league-best 11th shutout win. Three have come at the Blue Rocks' expense. Only two other teams in MiLB have issued more blankings than the Pelicans, a pair of Low-A squads in Lansing and Savannah with 12 each. There are 120 teams in full-season MiLB.
WILMINGTON RUNS ON DUNKIN': Wilmington suffered its league-worst 11th shutout loss of the season. That ties the Blue Rocks' for the second-most in the minors. Low-A Rome has been blanked a dozen times and sits at 32-63 overall in the South Atlantic League. Advanced-A Palm Beach (FSL) is the only other team in the minors to sit alongside Wilmington with 11 shutout losses.
POTENT PITCHING: In 13 games against the Blue Rocks this season, Myrtle Beach's pitching staff owns a 1.01 ERA and a .181 batting average against. The Blue Rocks have been outscored 44-27 in those meetings.
NO FREEBIES: In addition to 14 of the 27 runs being unearned, another reason the Pelicans possess such a good ERA against the Blue Crew is their walk rate. Over 116 innings in the head-to-head meetings, Myrtle Beach has issued a total of 28 walks or less than 2.2 per nine innings. Wilmington walked just once on Monday night.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE: Fields had two of the Rocks' five total hits (all singles)...The rest of the team went 3-for-26 (.115)...At two hours and seven minutes long, the game went three minutes longer than the Blue Rocks' shortest nine-inning game of the year, a 4-1 loss at Salem on April 26...Chase Boruff tossed two scoreless innings of relief...He has four shutout frames under his belt since rejoining the bullpen...Hanser Alberto's second home run of the year as a Pelican came in his 100th such at-bat...The Blue Rocks are guaranteed of another non-winning season at Myrtle Beach after falling to 2-5 in the Palmetto State last night...Wilmington has posted one winning season at Myrtle Beach since 2001.
SECOND LIFE: In the first half, the Blue Rocks scored just 227 runs for a league-low 3.2 runs/game average. Entering tonight, Wilmington has scored 131 runs over its first 24 games of the second stanza for an average of 5.5 runs/game. The team that hit 31 homers over the 70-game first half, the second-lowest total in the loop, has bashed 28 early in the second. The Blue Crew hit a league-worst .231 in the first half, but owns a .269 (224-for-832) clip this half.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: The Blue Rocks' struggles against Southern Division teams continued as they fell to 18-37 against those clubs. That includes an 8-20 mark when actually in a ballpark from the South. Wilmington is 23-16 overall against its brothers in the North.
SIMPSON SIR, SECTOR 7G: The Rocks have been bashing bombs at an incredible rate. Wilmington entered its last homestand with five homers over its first 39 home games. It then hit eight on the seven-game homestand. Since failing to homer on June 30, the Blue Rocks have slammed 22 dingers over 14 games.
