Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, got a near historic performance from starting pitcher Luke Jackson Tuesday, topping the Wilmington Rocks 7-2 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Jackson, making his fifth start since a promotion from Low-A Hickory, struck out a career high 12 batters in just five innings. Jackson becomes the fifteenth pitcher in Pelicans team history to strike out at least 12 batters in a game and the first since Joe Wieland K'd 13 against Potomac on May 4th. Jackson fell two strikeouts short of a franchise record, accomplished twice by Julio Teheran (2010) and Kyle Davies (2004).

Jackson picked up the win for the Pelicans, his second, after the offense exploded against Wilmington starter Brooks Pounders for five runs in the first two innings. Things got off to a great start in the first, when Odubel Herrera doubled ahead of a Hanser Alberto single. Both scored on a Christian Villanueva groundout and a Tomas Telis single. It was 2-0.

In the second Myrtle Beach hit around. The Pelicans plated three runs on five hits, but the avalanche began with a Jeremy Williams leadoff walk. Herrera, Brett Nicholas and Telis all picked up RBI. It was 5-1.

The Birds added two more to the tally in the fifth with RBI singles from Williams and Edwin Garcia. Those runs came off reliever Nick Graffeo.

The win moves Myrtle Beach to 16-9, two games up on chasing Carolina in the Carolina League South. Tomorrow Wilmer Font toes the rubber for the Pelicans with a 7:05 start. For tickets call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn.
