Mudcats Hold off Dash for 7-6 Win

ZEBULON, NC (JULY 17, 2012) - The Carolina Mudcats plated six runs in the seventh inning to vault past the Dash by a score of 7-6 in game two of a four-game set Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The loss snapped Winston-Salem's four-game winning streak, which dated back to Thursday.
With the game tied 1-1 through six, Winston-Salem (13-12, 57-37-1) jumped ahead with three runs. Cyle Hankerd doubled home the go-ahead run and later scored on a Michael Earley single. Earley's keen running capped the scoring in the frame after he scored from second on an infield single from Miguel Gonzalez.
However, the Mudcats (14-11, 46-49) responded in the bottom half by doubling up the Dash's seventh-inning output. Carolina scored six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits. Terance Marin (3-3), who entered Tuesday's action with a 1.43 earned run average, had an uncharacteristic night. Marin faced six batters, and all of them reached base. The six-run inning matches the highest number of runs surrendered by the Dash in a single frame this season.
Winston pulled within one in the eighth inning when Hankerd and Earley strung together consecutive RBI singles. However, the Dash stranded both men on base. One inning later, Marcus Semien doubled with two down, but Jose Flores retired the side for his 15th save of the season.
The Dash spoiled the best High-A outing of Blair Walters' young career. Walters held the Mudcats to one run in six strong innings for his first quality start with Winston-Salem. Walters whiffed six and scattered five base hits but settled for a no decision.
Through five innings, each team had one run. Winston dented the scoreboard on a Dan Black RBI single in the first. Carolina's first tally came in the fifth thanks to an Alex Monsalve sacrifice fly.
One-run games normally go the way of Winston-Salem. The Dash were 15-9 in games decided by one run prior to this contest, while Carolina was just 9-21 in such affairs.
Winston-Salem and Carolina continue this four-game series with a noon start Wednesday. The Dash send right-hander Steve McCray (4-1, 3.13 ERA) to the mound against Carolina southpaw Francisco Jimenez (7-6, 4.62 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com kicks off at 11:45 a.m.
