PEARL, Miss. -- Catcher Matt Spring hit a fourth-inning grand slam in his first Double-A game, but it still took the Montgomery Biscuits (26-21) 12 innings to beat the Mississippi Braves, 7-6, at Trustmark Park Thursday night.

Spring's slam keyed a five-run Biscuits fourth inning that gave Montgomery the 6-2 lead over Braves starter Matt Harrison (4-1). It was the ninth grand slam in Biscuits history.

Biscuits errors figured heavily into the Braves' (30-17) scoring. A Reid Brignac error in the first inning led to an unearned run for Chris Mason (6-1), who threw six innings in pursuit of his league-leading seventh win. He led, 6-3, when he departed, although the Braves would eventually erase the lead.

That happened after another big error by the Biscuits; Montgomery right fielder Shaun Cumberland dropped a fly ball in the seventh, leading to three runs against the Biscuits' bullpen.

The game stayed tied at six until the 12th, when Cumberland led off the inning with a single against Auburn alum Michael Nix. He advanced to second on a Spring sacrifice bunt and third on a Josh Asanovich groundout. With two outs, a Jason Pridie infield single provided the game winner.

Dale Thayer, normally the Biscuits' closer, earned the run by pitching all three extra innings. He allowed two hits and a walk but held the Braves scoreless in each inning.

Spring's Dobule-A debut, after a Wednesday call-up, also included a walk and two sacrifice bunts. He also caught Brent Lillibridge stealing in the eighth inning with a solid throw. Chris Nowak added three hits and John Jaso singled in the second to extend his hit streak to 12 games.

The game was the Biscuits' longest of the year, at 3 hours, 54 minutes.

The Biscuits' win evens the series at one game apiece. They move to four games behind the division-leading Braves and remain in a second-place tie with the Jacksonville Suns.

The series' middle game is Friday at 7:05 p.m. Montgomery lefty James Houser, Jr. (3-0) puts his 14-game win streak on the line against Mississippi lefthander Jo-Jo Reyes (4-1).
