Vanden Hurk's effort not enough for Carolina

Zebulon, NC- The Birmingham Barons bats came alive in the eighth inning to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 9-2 Friday night at Five County Stadium.

The game saw a strong start from both team's starting pitcher. Barons' starter Jack Egbert scattered five hits over seven innings to pick up his fourth win on the season. Egbert struck out five and gave up one run in the seventh.

Mudcats (18-31) starter Rick Vanden Hurk one-hit the Barons (22-27) through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. The Dutch righthander then gave up a pair of bunt singles as the Barons tacked up three runs in the sixth inning.

Carolina answered back an inning later when second baseman Eric Riggs scored off a Lee Mitchell double to make the game 3-1. Mitchell was stranded at third despite having only one out.

The Barons then scored five of those runs thanks to five consecutive hits which ended with a rocket three-run homer by left fielder Cory Aldridge. The Barons hit four straight singles before Aldridge brought two of those singles home. Birmingham would score one more run in the ninth.

The Mudcats its second run home by a eighth inning solo homer by centerfielder Jai Miller, his fifth of the season to go along with 13 RBI. Mudcats end the five game home stand against Birmingham with a 6:15 start tomorrow. Carolina sends Jesus Delgado (3-3, 3.83) to go up against lefty Wes Whisler (2-5, 4.21) and the Barons. Mudcats will then travel to Mobile and Montgomery for a 10-game road trip.
