Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - Kevin Mahoney homered to tie the game in the ninth for the second straight game, then Abraham Almonte's bases loaded hit won it in the 11th as the Trenton Thunder defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in front of 5,310 fans at Waterfront Park. Trenton finally earned a victory in a series during which each game went to extra innings and in the process avoided being swept for the first time this season.

For the third consecutive game, the Thunder had rallied from a deficit of at least three runs to force extra innings, this time a 3-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth. Trenton has now been tied in the ninth inning during its last eight games played dating back to Saturday April 28th at New Hampshire.

Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Mahoney led off against reliever Danny Farquhar and worked a full count. He then lined the payoff pitch deep over the right field fence for this third home run of the season, an almost identical shot to the game-tying home run in the ninth from Saturday. Trenton hit seven home runs in the ninth inning in the last week.

Luke Murton walked with one out in the 11th against Matt Daly (0-3) and then Mahoney followed with a base on balls prompting Tony Franklin to replace Murton with pinch-runner Jose Toussen. Toussen had just joined the team before game-time having been promoted from the Tampa Yankees.

After Jose Gil flew out to centerfield, pinch-hitter Dan Brewer walked to load the bases with two away. Almonte worked the count to 2-1, and lined Daly's pitch just fair inside the third-base bag into left field, scoring Toussen with the game-winning run.

Michael Dubee (2-0) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 11th to earn his second victory of the week. The Thunder bullpen combined for 5.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Cory Arbiso.

Almonte went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, while Mahoney has now reached base in 15 consecutive games played. Ryan Goins concluded an epic series for New Hampshire by going 3-for-3 with three walks. In the three games in Trenton this weekend Goins went 9-for-14 with three walks.

The Thunder have Monday off before beginning a quick two-game trip to first-place Reading on Tuesday night. Game one will have a 6:35 pm first pitch with righty Craig Heyer (1-2, 4.55) slated to pitch for the Thunder against righty Julio Rodriguez (2-0, 3.24). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
