Wisler Impresses in Missions' 1-0 Win over Travelers

Jake Blackwood's RBI double in the seventh inning was the difference as the Missions snuck past the Travelers 1-0 in a terrifically pitched game Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.

Matt Wisler got the ball for the Missions in just his third Double-A start. The 20-year-old, right-hander was coming off the worst outing of his young career, when he allowed five, first-inning runs in a May 17 loss at Frisco. Wisler was much better Thursday night to say the least, keeping the Travelers off the board during a career-high seven innings. It was the first time this season a San Antonio starter went seven in a game. Wisler (2-1) allowed seven hits and no walks, while striking out three.

For much of the night it looked like Wisler's impressive outing was going to go to waste, with his mound opponent, Manny Correa matching zeroes for the first six frames.

However, San Antonio finally got to Correa (2-4) in the bottom of the seventh, an inning that began with a Johan Limonta single to right. That brought to the plate, Blackwood, who lined Correa's 0-1 pitch into right center for a double, scoring Limonta from first. The Missions threatened to do more damage later in the frame, but caught a bad break when pinch-runner Kalian Sams missed third base trying to score on a single by Jeudy Valdez.

After Matt Stites put up a zero for the Missions in the eighth, Kevin Quackenbush worked around a walk and a hit in the ninth for his second save in as many nights.

The shutout victory was the second on the season for San Antonio (24-22), who also won for the fourth straight time at home, a new 2013 high.

The Missions (24-22) and Travelers (24-21) wrap up their three-game series Friday night, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. The first 1,500 fans will receive a Missions Road Cap courtesy of IPAC Mazda.
