Midland RockHounds News Release
The Tulsa Drillers and the RockHounds combined to hit seven home runs Wednesday night, but it was a "trio" of errors that opened the door to Tulsa's decisive, seven-run fifth inning that changed the course of the game.
The 'Hounds had taken their second lead of the game, 2-1, on David Freitas' solo home run in the top of the fifth. The Drillers got a lead-off walk from Jayson Langfels in the home half of the fifth, with Jose Gonzalez then sending a long one-hopper toward shortstop ... a potential double-play ball. Dusty Coleman misplayed the ball, then collided with Langfels as he crossed second base. Conner Crumbliss' throw to third went wide, allowing Gonzalez to advance to second base. Three errors on one at bat ... and the Drillers made the 'Hounds pay the price.
Following the miscues, Rafael Ortega, Kiel Roling, and Kyle Parker each homered in what would be a seven-run fifth inning, as the Drillers took command, building an 8-2 lead.
South Division
Corpus Christi was a winner at home against Northwest Arkansas, building its lead to two games over Frisco, with San Antonio (also a winner at home) three games back and the 'Hounds falling five behind the Hooks. There are 26 games remaining in the first half pennant race.
Kibbles & Bits
- D'Arby Myers, the team's hottest hitter of late, was a late scratch from Wednesday's line-up. D'Arby is 17-for-37 (.460) in his last nine games and 15-for-30 (.500) in his last seven.
- "Insult to injury:" Anthony Aliotti went 0-for-4, snapping his 17-game on-base streak.
- Tulsa's winning pitcher was Sean Gallagher. The former Major Leaguer signed a minor league deal with Colorado and was making his second start for the Drillers. He went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs (earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out four.
- The RockHounds will face another former big leaguer Friday when Roy Oswalt makes his first start for Tulsa. The former Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies star also signed a minor league deal with the Rockies, and is expected to make as many as five starts for Tulsa. One of those would likely be at Citibank Ballpark (details ASAP).
- The RockHounds ... in the midst of playing 14-of-18 games on the road ... play at Tulsa Thursday and Friday evenings (7:05) before traveling on to Springfield, Missouri, for a three-game set with the Cardinals (Saturday-Monday).
