Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the Lansing Lugnuts 12-9 Friday night. Wisconsin held a lead of 6-0 and could not hold it. The Lugnuts had a 9-8 lead and could not it. Jeff Clement went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI for the Rattlers. Chris Colton added three hits, three runs scored, and two RBI for the Rattlers.
Wisconsin (70-55 overall, 31-24 second half) wasted no time getting on the board against the struggling Lugnuts. Josh Womack singled with one out and Yung Chi Chen lined a home run just over the wall in left for a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Clement smashed a three-run homer to right and the Rattlers were up 5-0.
Clement pushed the Rattlers up 6-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Rattler starting pitcher Shawn Nottingham kept the Lugnuts (59-65, 22-33) off the board through the first three innings, but as he approached his pitch count limit in the top of the fourth, Lansing started to rally. Aaron Mathews got the Lugnuts on the board with a sacrifice fly. Nottingham gave up a single to David Corrente on his final pitch and left with runners at first and second and a 6-1 lead.
Rattler reliever Jason Snyder entered and got the second out of the inning, but ran into trouble from there. Jason Armstrong drove in a run with a single. A walk to Christian Snavely loaded the bases. Eric Nielsen followed with a two-run single and pulled the Lugnuts to within 6-4. An RBI single by Charlie Anderson made it 6-5. Reliever Steve Grasley got out of the inning with a tapper back to him.
Wisconsin pushed two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Colton had an RBI single and would score on a throwing error to second when Colton and Clement were attempting a double steal.
The Rattlers could not hold the 8-5 lead.
Lansing scored four times after there were two outs and nobody on base in the top of the sixth to take a 9-8 lead. A three-run double by Ryan Klosterman tied the game. Klosterman scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error while he was attempting to steal third.
The Lugnuts could not hold their lead.
Wisconsin scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. Chen tied the game with an RBI single. Marshall Hubbard doubled into right to knock in the go ahead run. Colton had an RBI single and Clement followed with an RBI double for a 12-9 lead.
Sanity (and pitching) returned to the game after the Rattlers retook the lead. Jon Lockwood worked the final three innings without allowing a run to get the save.
Steve Grasley was the winning pitcher despite allowing the Lugnuts to score four runs in the top of the sixth. Grasley is 9-0 on the season.
Game two of the series is Saturday night. Mark Lowe (6-4, 5.40ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Po-Hsung Keng (3-5, 5.29ERA) is slated to start for the Lugnuts. Game time is 7:05pm.
