South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Just when the South Bend Silver Hawks thought it was safe to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labors, the reality of a team looking to finish the season strong greeted them...and in a rude fashion. The Dayton Dragons, who came into Friday's game in last place in the second half of the Eastern Division of the Midwest League, looked anything but the part of a last place team disrupting the Silver Hawks five game win streak in a 9-2 win over South Bend.
The Dragons trailed 2-1 heading into the third and opened their lead on the Silver Hawks. Jorge Mejia opened with a single to left and kept going to second on left fielder Jereme Milons fielding error. Cody Strait then singled to left to score Mejia for a 2-2 Dayton lead, while Strait advanced to second on a throwing error Milons. With two out in the frame, Jeremiah Piepkorn walked putting runners at first and second and John Purdom singled down the left-field line scoring Strait and moving Piepkorn to third for a 4-2 Dragons lead. Trevor Lawhorn then doubled to left field plating Piepkorn, while Jordan Belcher's double to left chased Purdom and Lawhorn making it 6-2. Bradley Key's single to left concluding the scoring as Belcher raced home from second for a 7-2 Dragons lead.
South Bend's Chris Kinsey (4-3) took the loss, while Homer Bailey (6-4) picked up the win.
Reliever Omar Segovia (2) received credit for the save.
