West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Fort Wayne pitchers struck out 15 Whitecaps batters to make a four-run fifth stand up in a 6-3 victory over West Michigan. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, West Michigan retaliated with three consecutive two-out extra base hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jeff Frazier tripled and scored on a double by Wilkin Ramirez. Luis Sabino doubled to drive in Ramirez. Fort Wayne tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second thanks to a lead-off double by Nick Hundley and a ground ball RBI from Sean Kazmar. In the fifth, Whitecaps starter Jair Jurrjens was touched for four runs on five hits. A two-run single by Matt Thayer was the big blow of the inning as it put the Wizards in front for good, 4-2. The 6-2 advantage lasted until the eighth when Chris Robinson doubled to lead off and eventually scored on an RBI walk from Sabino. Frazier helped load the bases when he was hit on the hand by a pitch. However, Matt Parrish went in to pinch run at first for Frazier, who left the game. Cesar Ramos started on the hill for Fort Wayne and struck out eight batters in 5.1 innings. Reliever Neil Jamison and Brandon Kintzler struck out two and three, respectively. After West Michigan left the bases loaded in the eighth, stranding the tying run on base, closer Matt Varner retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth. Varner raised his Midwest League leading total of saves to 32.
