Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, IN - The Dayton Dragons (22-33, 52-73) had not won four consecutive games since a five game winning streak in the first half of the season, May 15 - May 19. Dayton picked up a season high fourth consecutive win on the road with an impressive 9-3 opening game win in a four game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks (33-22, 74-51) in front of 2,185 at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend.

Dayton got on the board in the top half of the first inning and once again, Adam Rosales was the Dragons catalyst once again. The energetic shortstop picked up a one out double off the top of the left field wall and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Chris Kinsey (L, 4-3) on a ball four pitch to Tonys Gutierrez. With first and third and one down, Jeremiah Piepkorn picked up his 70th run batted in on the season with a sac fly for a 1-0 Dragons lead.

South Bend took the lead off Dayton starter Homer Bailey (W, 6-4) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. A two out infield single by Mark Reynolds and a walk issued to Billy Lockin set the table for Brandon Simon who doubled into the right field corner scoring both runners and giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

The Dragons retook the lead and broke the game open, battering Kinsey for six runs and six hits in the top of the third inning. Jorge Mejia led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a juggle job in left by Jereme Milons. Cody Strait followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. With two down in the inning Dayton came alive. Piepkorn reached with a walk to put runners at first and second. John Purdom knocked in a run with a single for a 3-2 Dragons lead. Lawhorn followed with his second RBI on a sac fly for a 4-2 advantage. Jordan Belcher made it 6-2 with a two RBI double to right and Bradley Key closed out the six run inning with a run scoring single to left for a 7-2 Dayton lead.

Bailey ran out of pitches before he ran out of steam on the night. The right hander was throwing the ball well and looked in control, but was lifted after 5.0 innings once hitting the "magic number" of 75 pitches. Bailey struck out four and walked two, scattering six hits and allowing two runs, both earned.

Dayton added single runs in the fifth and in the seventh innings. In the fifth facing Kinsey in his final inning of work, Piepkorn was hit by a pitch to lead the frame off. He moved to second on a passed ball charged to Wilkin Castillo, got to third on a Purdom ground out and scored on a Lawhorn sac fly to extend the Dayton lead to 8-2. The bulge grew to 9-2 in the seventh off Ryan Coffin (ND) as Rosales added his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left.

Jon George (ND) tossed a scoreless inning of relief in support of Bailey, blanking the Hawks in the sixth inning before giving way to Omar Segovia (SV, 2). Segovia finished the final three innings of the game, surrendering one run on two hits. The left hander struck out and walked two, picking up his second save of the season.

The Silver Hawks picked up its final run of the night in the bottom of the ninth on another run producing hit from Simon. A single off Segovia gave Simon his third RBI of the night and closed out the scoring at 9-3.

The Dragons continue the four game series at South Bend on Saturday night. The second game of the series from Coveleski Stadium begins at 8:00 PM, with RHP James Avery getting the start for the Dragons. The Silver Hawks will counter with RHP Ross Ohlendorf. The pre game show begins on 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM at 7:30 PM.
