Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. On a night with the Bulldogs missing key pieces in Jan Jenik, Isaac Nurse & Jake Gravelle, it was rookie Ryan Winterton who stepped up with a two-goal effort, but it wouldn't be enough as a three goal second period for Niagara staked the IceDogs to a lead they wouldn't surrender.
The opening period took a couple minutes for the Hamilton Bulldogs to find their game as 6 minutes into the game the Niagara Ice Dogs held an 11-0 lead in shots with Zachary Roy showing his goal mouth heroics several times. Hamilton would begin to turn the momentum seeing chances from both Arthur Kaliyev and Lawson Sherk but the team would end up in penalty trouble, penalties 20 seconds apart would leave the Bulldogs down 5-on-3 for an extended period, again Zachary Roy was tremendous with back to back highlight reel glove saves. Before the period was out however, despite Roy's 17 saves the Ice Dogs would strike first, Ethan Sims would score his 1st in the OHL at 12:15 and despite a late period press, the Bulldogs would head to the locker room down 1-0 after 20.
The second frame would open much better for the visiting Bulldogs, Ryan Winterton would record his 3rd goal of the season picking up George Diaco's breakaway rebound after a brilliant stretch pass from Kade Landry at 4:16. Bulldogs would follow that quickly with a 2-on-1, Avery Hayes would draw Tucker Tynan in before distributing to Tag Bertuzzi for his 4th goal of the campaign at 5:57. The IceDogs however would follow with three straight goals, at 7:51 Ivan Lodnia would collect his 2nd of the season before back to back lazer beams from Akil Thomas, his 3rd & 4th of the season coming 7 minutes apart to give the IceDogs a 2-goal lead heading to the locker room after two periods of play.
Hamilton would get a burst of energy to open the second period, Navrin Mutter would start the rush, finding Diaco to his right who would feed Ryan Winterton for his 2nd of the game and 4th of the season, giving the Bulldogs rookie his first two goal game in the OHL, just 1:33 in the first period. It was as close as the Bulldogs would get on the night however as with the IceDogs on the power-play, Oliver Castleman would tip in his 6th of the season at 5:26 of the period, the last marker of the night, securing the 5-3 IceDogs victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action tomorrow, October 26th when they host the beginning of a home and home with the Oshawa Generals at 4pm. The three in three weekend concludes on Sunday evening at 6:05pm from the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa.
