Winterhawks' Win Streak Hits 4 With 5-1 Win Over Seattle Saturday

The Portland Winterhawks (31-14-0-3) extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-1 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds (18-21-4-5) Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Coliseum in front of a crowd of 7,395.

Craig Cunningham opened the scoring for Portland when he beat Seattle netminder Calvin Pickard 6:41 into the game to make it 1-0. The Winterhawks struck again at the 15:05 mark on a power play when Ryan Johansen scored his 21st goal of the season to make it 2-0. The score would last through the end of the period, a frame in which the Winterhawks outshot Seattle 21-7.

Cunningham struck again for Portland at the 16:28 mark of the second period, giving Portland a 3-0 lead they would take into the third period.

The Winterhawks then took control of the game early in the third with goals 1:15 apart by Taylor Peters and Ty Rattie to make the score 5-0. Portland goaltender Keith Hamilton's shutout bid was ended with 3:27 remaining in the third when the Thunderbirds got a shorthanded goal from Marcel Noebels to round out the scoring.

Along with Cunningham's two goals, the Winterhawks got one goal and two assists from Rattie.

Portland outshot Seattle 49-34 on the afternoon, just three shots shy of their season-high. Hamilton stopped 33 of the 34 Seattle shots he faced, while Pickard stopped 44 of Portland's 49 shots.

The Winterhawks were 1-4 on the power play and a perfect 5-5 on the penalty kill.

The Winterhawks return to the ice tomorrow when they host the Spokane Chiefs at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
