Winterhawks Weekly: Three Home Games Highlight Thanksgiving Week
November 20, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Winterhawks returned home for a pair of weekend contests at the VMC, dropping a tight one to Prince Albert on Friday and ousting division rival Everett on Sunday.
The team now looks ahead to a busy Thanksgiving week, starting on home ice Wednesday against Victoria. The Hawks then head north to battle the Silvertips once again, before returning home for Neon Night on Saturday against Saskatoon and a Sunday clash with Spokane. See you there!
Hot Hawks:
Forward Josh Davies scored twice and chipped in a helper in Sunday's win over the Silvertips, notching his 100th WHL point in the process. The Florida Panthers prospect has been on a heater with the Hawks, producing at more than a point-per-game clip and leading the team in goals (13).
Forward Marcus Nguyen set up Nick Johnson's goal on Friday, then picked up a goal and an assist on Sunday to push his point streak to three games. Nguyen has points in all but two games this month and ranks sixth in team scoring.
Forward Gabe Klassen picked up three helpers against Everett and has recorded multiple points in five of seven games this month. The Hawks' captain ranks tied for sixth in league scoring with 34 points in 19 games.
Defenseman Carter Sotheran scored twice on Sunday, marking his first multi-goal game in the WHL. Selected by Philadelphia in the 2023 NHL Draft, Sotheran has scored three game-winning goals this season - tied for the most among WHL blueliners.
Defenseman Luca Cagnoni posted two assists in Sunday's win over Everett and has logged multiple points in five of seven games during November. The San Jose Sharks prospect ranks second among all WHL defensemen with 28 points on the year.
Play of the Week:
Carter Sotheran showed off his skating ability for his first of two goals on Sunday, executing this backhanded wraparound to perfection en route to his first multi-goal game in the WHL. Swipe through for all the angles!
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 1 vs Prince Albert 2 (Friday):
The Winterhawks returned to home ice in front of a packed VMC, but Prince Albert netminder Max Hildebrand stole the show with 37 saves in a 2-1 Raiders win on Friday night.
Portland 6 vs Everett 4 (Saturday):
Carter Sotheran and Josh Davies each scored twice for Portland as the Winterhawks held off a late Silvertips charge for a 5-4 win at the VMC on Sunday evening.
The Week Ahead:
