Published on November 20, 2023 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced Monday that Koehn Ziemmer of the Prince George Cougars has been named Tempo WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 19, 2023.
The Cougars alternate captain tallied nine points (4G-5A) and a plus-3 rating in four games as Prince George went 3-1-0-0 over that stretch.
Ziemmer also put pen to paper on a three-year, entry-level deal with the Los Angeles Kings on Friday.
"It's a pretty surreal feeling," Ziemmer said. "You play hockey your whole life dreaming of playing in the NHL one day, and this is one step closer for me. To sign on the dotted line is pretty cool."
The Mayerthorpe, Alta. product was selected in the third round, 78th overall by LA in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Ziemmer earned first-star honours with a two-goal, two-assist performance on Tuesday, Nov. 14 as the Cougars shut out the Vancouver Giants 5-0 at the CN Centre.
The speedy winger notched the game-winning goal just :09 into the opening period thanks to a strong play off the faceoff.
He'd double the lead later in the first when he fanned on a pass from Riley Heidt but batted the fluttering puck out of the air and into the back of the net.
Ziemmer added a pair of primary assists on two Heidt goals in the second period- including a powerplay marker 9:30 into the middle frame.
The Giants would exact some revenge with a 6-1 win the following night, but still couldn't keep Ziemmer off the scoresheet as he provided the secondary assist on an Ondrej Becher goal in the second period.
Prince George powered by the Giants in the finale of the three-game set with another 5-0 shutout performance.
Ziemmer teed up captain Hudson Thornton's powerplay marker 2:38 into the second period.
Then, Ziemmer picked off a Vancouver pass in the neutral zone and set up Zac Funk for his 17th goal of the season.
The 6'1, 203-pound 18-year-old closed out the week by leading a 5-4 comeback effort on the road against the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday, November 18.
Prince George was trailing 4-1 late in the second frame when Ziemmer and Heidt would combine for another highlight-reel play.
Ziemmer sent Heidt off to the races with a stretch pass, Heidt circled the Rockets' net and fed his teammate on the doorstep to cut Kelowna's lead in half.
Finally, with less than four minutes remaining in the third period, Ziemmer gave the Cougars their first lead of the game when it mattered most, poking a loose puck behind the goaltender home for the win.
Ziemmer sits 16th in the WHL in scoring with 28 points (9G-19A) in 18 games. 11 of those matches have been multi-point efforts.
Originally selected by the Prince George Cougars in the first round (4th overall) of the 2019 WHL Draft, Ziemmer is on milestone watch as he closes in on the 100 regular season goals (currently sitting at 89) and assists (97) mark.
The Cougars will now take a well-earned break before kicking off a three-game home stand at the CN Centre, where they boast a 10-3-0-0 record.
The puck drops against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. PST on November 24.
