Winterhawks Weekly: Portland Sweeps Seattle in Weekend Set

March 21, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

After an up-and-down, travel-heavy second week of March, the Winterhawks topped rival Seattle in both ends of a home-and-home set on Saturday and Sunday.

Portland has now won nine of its last 11, and sits just five points shy of first place in the WHL's Western Conference.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Jaydon Dureau tallied a hat-trick in Saturday's 4-1 win in Seattle - his second three-goal performance since Feb. 5. Dureau's hat-trick was the first by a Portland player against Seattle since Seth Jarvis did so in April 2021.

Forward Marcus Nguyen found the scoresheet in each game last week, lighting the lamp on Saturday and setting up Aidan Litke's third-period tally on Sunday. Nguyen has points in three straight games (3G, 1A).

Defenseman Cross Hanas picked up two helpers in Saturday's win, then potted the game-winning goal in Sunday's shutout. Hanas currently boasts a three-game point streak with a goal and three assists in that span.

Defenseman Ryder Thompson posted assists in each game last week to stretch his point streak to three games (3A).

Goaltender Taylor Gauthier stopped 33 of 34 shots on Saturday, then posted a 20-save shutout on Sunday to earn WHL Goalie of the Week honors for a third time in a Winterhawks sweater. Gauthier leads the league with a .935 save percentage and ranks third with a 2.12 GAA on the year.

Play of the Week:

The Winterhawks got off to a flying start in Seattle on Saturday as the power play got things rolling just 22 seconds into the contest. It's a fine piece of playmaking as Tyson Kozak wins the faceoff to Cross Hanas, who then plays a give-and-go with Clay Hanus at the blue line before sending the puck down low to James Stefan. One quick cross-crease pass to Jaydon Dureau later, it's a 1-0 Hawks lead in hostile territory.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 4 at Seattle 1 (Saturday):

Jaydon Dureau grabbed his second hat-trick of the year, Taylor Gauthier made 33 saves and the Winterhawks picked up their fourth straight road win over the Thunderbirds with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night.

Portland 3 vs Seattle 0 (Sunday):

Taylor Gauthier stopped all 20 shots that came his way as the Winterhawks ousted the Thunderbirds for the second consecutive evening by a 3-0 score at the VMC on Sunday.

The Week Ahead:

Another set of U.S. Division matchups awaits the Winterhawks this week as they face off with Tri-City and Everett!

On Friday, Portland hosts the Americans at the VMC for the penultimate duel between the clubs. The Winterhawks have taken five consecutive wins over the Americans, outscoring them 33-8 with two shutouts in that span. Puck drop is set for 7:00 P.M. on Friday.

After tangling with Tri-City, the Hawks head north to Everett for a matchup of the top two teams in the U.S. Division. Portland has won four straight against the Silvertips, and trail them by five points for the top spot in the division. That game starts at 6:05 P.M. at Angel of the Winds Arena, and you can catch the action on WHL Live!
