Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Taylor Gauthier stopped all 20 shots that came his way as the Winterhawks ousted the Thunderbirds for the second consecutive evening by a 3-0 score at the VMC on Sunday. Gauthier's goose-egg marked his fourth shutout since joining the Winterhawks, and the Calgary, Alta. native stopped 53 of 54 total shots during this weekend's back-to-back set against Seattle.
Following a scoreless opening stanza, Cross Hanas grabbed the game's first goal (and eventual game-winner) on an individual rush, wiring the puck off the post and into the back of the net on Milic's stick side. The goal marked Hanas' team-leading 74th point of the season.
Aidan Litke then doubled Portland's advantage early in the third period, capitalizing on a 2-on-0 rush with Marcus Nguyen. Kurtis Smythe found Nguyen with a breakout pass, then Portland's #72 deftly worked his way past Kevin Korchinski in the neutral zone before setting up Litke with a back-door feed. Litke has now tallied 16 goals on the year, good for seventh on the team.
Tyson Kozak potted an empty-net strike to seal up Portland's win late in the third period.
The Hawks next take the ice on Friday as they host the Tri-City Americans. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. for that tilt.
