Winterhawks Top Chiefs 6-3 on Friday Night

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs came up empty in their bid for a third-straight win on Friday night as they fell 6-3 to the Portland Winterhawks.

The Winterhawks got on the board first at 5:04, but the Chiefs responded at 13:28 when a face off from the right circle found its way to Filip Kral, who fired it home from the high slot to tie it up at 1-1. The goal gave Kral a point in three-straight games and eight of the last nine.

Portland scored a power play goal from Johnny Ludvig at 16:18 to enter the intermission leading 2-1, then added another from Cross Hanas at 12:53 of the second to make it 3-1.

Spokane chipped back within one at 14:40 of the period when Cordel Larson came out ahead on a scrum in front of Portland goaltender Joel Hofer, backhanding in his second of the season to make it 3-2.

Portland regained a two-goal advantage at 6:13 of the third when second-year forward Seth Jarvis converted on a penalty shot, then made it 5-2 at 7:34 with a goal from Jake Gricius.

Luke Toporowski picked up his second in as many games at 8:32, popping one home off a perfect cross-crease feed from Kral to make it at 5-3 game. Gricius added a goal at 15:21 to give him five points on the night and seal the 6-3 victory.

Chiefs goaltender Campbell Arnold was 27-for-33 for the Chiefs while Hofer went 32-for-35 for the Winterhawks. Spokane was held 0-for-3 on the power play while Portland went 1-for-4.

Spokane looks to bounce back on Saturday night as the host the reigning WHL Champion Prince Albert Raiders at 7:05 p.m.
