Winterhawks to Wear Portland Rosebuds Throwback Uniforms on March 9
February 29, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - A Rose City classic returns! The Portland Winterhawks today announced a specialty Portland Rosebuds-inspired uniform to be worn on Saturday, March 9, for Oregon Hockey History Night. The jerseys will also be raffled off during this year's WAHA "Jersey Off Their Backs" Night on March 23 - fans can purchase raffle tickets at the WAHA table outside Entry CC on the VMC concourse.
The on-ice jerseys are modeled after the 1925-26 Rosebuds of the original Western Hockey League, the second iteration of the team. Featuring a black base, the on-ice uniform features a fully stitched crest that matches the shield shape and iconic rose of the classic Rosebuds sweater, with an updated color scheme to the Winterhawks' red and gold. The crest is embroidered with gold stitching accents throughout the rose petals. Squall gray striping adorns the sweater in multiple patterns, from a three-hoop motif around the center of the torso to five evenly spaced stripes down the arm. Player names and numbers also have a little extra flair, with unique embroidery on felt materials adding to the historic look of these sweaters.

These jerseys honor the 1925-26 group, but the history of the Rosebuds extends even farther back. The first team to sport that moniker played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and became the first U.S. team to participate in the Stanley Cup Final after winning the PCHA Championship in 1916. The city of Portland is permanently engraved on hockey's holy grail thanks to that appearance.

The game jerseys will be worn during Oregon Hockey History Night on March 9, but sublimated replica versions will be for sale in the team store starting this Saturday, March 2 for Glass Palace Night. Please note - replica versions will not feature the stitched crest application. Rosebuds-themed merchandise will be also available in the team store on March 9.
In addition, local collector Scott Petterson's authentic Portland hockey memorabilia collection will be on display on the concourse outside Entry MM during the game on March 9 for Winterhawks fans to view and learn about the unique hockey history in the Rose City.
Fans interested in acquiring the fully-stitched, game-worn versions of the Rosebuds throwbacks can purchase a raffle ticket for the annual Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) "Jersey Off Their Backs" giveaway. This annual event gives Hawks fans the chance to win a jersey from a Winterhawks player following the game on March 23. Raffle tickets cost $10 each and are available at the WAHA table on the concourse outside Entry CC. Golden tickets are also available for $1,250 to guarantee your selection in the winning group.
