Winterhawks Shut Out T-Birds

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-0 Thursday night at the Rose Garden in Portland.

The T-Birds next game is Sunday, January 3, against the Spokane Chiefs at ShoWare Center at 5:05 p.m.

Portland (25-15-0-1) took a 1-0 lead at 2:27 of the first on a goal by Brad Ross. Seth Swenson and Taylor Aronson had the assists on the goal.

The Winterhawks outshot the T-Birds 15-0 in the first period.

Portland took a 2-0 lead on a five-on-three power-play goal by Spencer Bennett at 12:29 of the second period. Troy Rutkowski and Joe Morrow had the assists.

Portland led 26-19 in total shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 11-9 in the second period.

Riley Boychuk put the Winterhawks in front 3-0 at 4:34 of the third period. Chris Francis and Bennett assisted on the goal.

Francis scored at 11:01 of the third to give Portland a 4-0 lead. Bennett and Morrow had the assists on the goal.

Ross added a second goal on the night, at 11:46 of the third, to put the Winterhawks in front 5-0. Oliver Gabriel and Johansen were credited with the assists.

Kyle Jahraus replaced Calvin Pickard in Seattle's net after Portland's fifth goal. Pickard made 28 saves on 33 shots and his record is now 11-17-2-4. Jahraus made 3 saves on 4 shots in his seven and a half minutes of action.

Johansen scored Portland's sixth goal at 15:24 of the third on assists from Gabriel and Ross.

Seattle (13-21-2-4) outshot Portland 14-11 in the third period but Portland finished with a 37-33 advantage in total shots.

Portland goalie Ian Curtis stopped all 33 shots he faced to get the shutout send his record to 15-6-0-0.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
