Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oil Kings ended 2009 on a sour note in their New Year's Eve clash with the Brandon Wheat Kings Thursday night.

It was a tough night both on the scoreboard and mentally as they faced their former teammate Brent Raedeke who was dealt to the 2010 Memorial Cup hosts the day before.

Raedeke would score once in his return to Rexall Place ice, and Jesse Sinatynski, would score a natural hat-trick in the second period, pacing the Wheat Kings to a 6-2 victory over the Oil Kings.

Oil Kings forward Brett Breitkreuz and Robin Soudek would add third period markers for Edmonton, while Aaron Lewadniuk and Paul Van de Velde would add singles for Brandon.

The loss drops the Oil Kings record to 10-21-4-5.

"It was emotional for the guys," said Oil Kings captain Rhett Rachinski.

" It (the trade) did just happen right away, but at the same time you still got to go out there and play the game.

"Towards the beginning it took us awhile to get into the game. It was weird seeing him in a new jersey."

Paul Van de Velde and Raedeke would score two late first period markers to give Brandon a 2-0 lead. The Wheat Kings high powered offence went into full gear in the second period tallying four more goals.

It was a rough night for Oil Kings netminder Torrie Jung (7-18-2-4), who was pulled after allowing four goals on 12 shots.

Cam Lanigan would enter and make 20 saves in relief.

Despite being down, the Oil Kings did put together a strong third period leading to their two goals.

"We still have a lot of work to do as far as coming together as a group," said Rachinski.

"We have a lot of new guys coming in. Towards the end of the game we started to get more comfortable and we were going on the attack a little bit more and it showed on the scoreboard."

The Oil Kings have a busy weekend ahead as they will face their arch-rival Red Deer Rebels in a home-and home series beginning Saturday night in Red Deer.

They will return Sunday afternoon and face the Rebels at 2 p.m. It's a special Signature Sunday as Oil Kings fans will be able to get all their favourite Oil Kings autographs after the game.

Tickets start at just $15 and are available at any Ticketmaster location, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at oilkings.ca.
