Rookies Lead Wheat Kings To Win
January 1, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB -- The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out 2009 News Year Eve by beating the hometown Oil Kings 6-2 in Edmonton.
The win snapped a 2-game losing streak for the Wheat Kings, who remain two points back of the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division leading Saskatoon Blades, who edged the Silvertips 2-1 in Everett Thursday night.
After scoring four goals in the first two games of the trip - both losses - the Wheat Kings exploded for six goals in the first two periods of Thursday's game, including three by rookie Jesse Sinatynski in the second period.
A 17-year old rookie from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Sinatynski's first career WHL hat trick gave Brandon a 6-0 second period lead and the Wheat Kings never looked back as they improved to 26-13-0-2 on the season.
Paul Van de Velde, Aaron Lewadniuk and former Oil King Brent Raedeke, with his second goal in as many games with the Wheat Kings, also scored for the winners who return home this weekend to meet the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night.
Former Portage Terrier Brenden Walker added three assists in Thursday's win.
Thursday's game marked the Oil King debut of former Wheat King Klarc Wilson. The tenth overall pick in the 2008 WHL bantam draft was dealt to Edmonton this week in exchange for Raedeke, who left the Oil Kings as that club's all time leading scorer.
Raedeke will be making his Brandon debut on Saturday and tickets to that game will go back on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
Saturday's game will feature another PhysioFirst Chuck-a-Puck during the second intermission, with proceeds going to Funds for Furry Friends. Funds for Furry Friends is a nationally registered charity, run by local volunteers. The organization has rescued over one thousand dogs since it was established in 2001.
