Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (43-7-1-2) dominated early en route to a 4-0 win over the visiting Spokane Chiefs (30-20-2-0) Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in front of 9,079 fans.
Mac Carruth posted his sixth shutout of the season, setting a new franchise single-season record. It was also the 10th of his career, extending that record as he stopped all 26 Spokane shots. It was the team's 11th shutout of the season, extending a team record.
Defenseman Troy Rutkowski tied a franchise record of his own, playing in his 221st consecutive game, tying Andrew Ference for the team's ironman record. Ference initially set the mark from Feb. 18/95 - Oct. 11/98.
The Hawks dominated the first period, outshooting Spokane 21-1. They broke through for the first goal of the game 14:22 into the first when Taylor Leier scored his 20th of the season to make it 1-0. Then with time running down in the period and the Hawks on a power play, Brendan Leipsic tipped in a point shot with 17.4 seconds left in the frame to make it 2-0 going into the second period.
Leipsic struck again 1:05 into the second with his second of the game to open up a 3-0 lead early in the period in what would be the lone tally of the frame.
Portland's Oliver Bjorkstrand scored at the 15:47 mark of the third to round out the scoring and give the Hawks the 4-0 win.
Portland was 1-6 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks are now off until Wednesday, when they host the Calgary Hitmen at the Coliseum at 7 p.m.
